Axl, I don't think you should 'blame' Leonard for the 168lb division. He was the first WBC champ but it was the IBF that started the division off. Murray Sutherland was IBF super middleweight champ 4 years before Leonard beat Lalonde for the WBC title.

As far as I'm aware Kessler is ranked #1.

So Calzaghe clearly beat the No 1 ranked fighter in a division that at the moment is a great division? Agreed....

    Right time for bed...

You're talking about 'at the moment'.

When Calzaghe was a super-middleweight it wasn't a great division. Simple as that.

Kessler is a very good fighter, but I'm still waiting for you to tell me why beating Kessler makes Calzaghe great?

Kessler was the best of a bad bunch.

Im not blaming anybody for the 168lbs division. But its a fact, that the 168 division only exists because of Sugar Ray Leonard who was a massive 'money-maker' in boxing .. Calzaghe is the only guy that has made serious money and a serious reputation from this kind of 'stepping stone' division ..
Super Middle is like Cruiser to me, it always will be .... If you weigh between 161 and 168 you must have the balls to step up to 175 and if your at Cruiser, at some point you have to test yourself at Heavy if you want to be respected and if you want the big bucks .....
Its no coincidence that Calzaghe went to 175 to get the biggest paydays of his career, nobody is interested in 168 .... The same with Holyfield and Haye, these guys wanted some big money and they were never going to find it at Cruiserweight ....

TFFP, will you be doing a seperate thread for Hagler vs Leonard or will it be staying on this one?

That is a great historical point though .. The 168 division had been talked about for at least 30 years to my knowledge before it actually came to pass, but it took a fighter like Sugar Ray Leonard to give it credibility .. When he fought for the title it gave the whole division credibility and from now on the Super Middleweight (168) will be a legitimate division in boxing ..
It has no history, it's a another division that generates money but for me any 168 champion will be judged against the great Middleweight Champs and the great Light Heavy Champs .... In its own right the 168 division holds no water with me knowing that countless fighters in the past had to make a decision to either boil down to 160 or to go up to 175 .. They didnt have the comfortable choice to go to 168, Monzon wouldnt have had to have killed himself to make 160, year upon year if the 168 division was an option .....

Thats a great post. I'm a bit undecided myself over that division, theres a lot of great fighters who's careers were affected because they couldn't make 160 but were too small to give 175 a real go.

    Round 2-Collazo 10-9
    Round 3-Hatton 10-9
    Round 4-Hatton 10-9
    Round 5-Collazo 10-9
    Round 6-Collazo 10-9
    Round 7-Hatton 10-9
    Round 8-Hatton 10-9
    Round 9-Hatton 10-9
    Round 10-Collazo 10-9
    Round 11-Hatton 10-9
    Round 12-Collazo 10-9
Total:115-112 Hatton.Thought Hatton won it without the KD anyway altough there were many close rounds and I could see Collazo winning but I thought Hatton deserved the nod.

Btw I propose Hopkins vs Calzaghe as the next fight as it has a brit fighter involved and also should pruduce some major scoring differences.Should be interesting.
