According to Boxing Monthly writer Glyn Leach, "should Hatton prevail, for the first time in history Britain will have a world pound-for-pound champion."

    :rofl:rofl:rofl

Now I would love a Brit to be no 1 P4P but you can't just manufacture one by making your own rules. P4P is NON TRANSFERABLE. Leach may think Hatton is P4P but in 99% of peoples eyes, if Hatton wins, either Manny stays no1 or JMM becomes no1.

I get BM on subscription every year - gives my relatives something to buy for me at Xmas other than socks. I read that and was very surpised that it was written like it was a fact.

Yes I saw the same article. Was a bit disapointed to be honest. I still bought it as I like to read Graham Houstons articles. I'm a bit fed up with Hatton saying this now but I can understand that he is trying to sell the fight so fair enough...kind of. For Leach to be saying this though is pathetic and it stinks of a UK magazine spouting its Pro-UK propaganda. I'm from manchester too :)

Are there any previous examples of someone remaining in the consensus P4P number one spot after a defeat?

You appear to misunderstand the nature of P4P. It's an entirely subjective personal ranking system. So, yes, you can 'make your own rules'. That's pretty much the point.

Hattons selling a fight but its nexcuseable for a writer in a trade magazine to subscribe to that line of thinking.

Personally, I would have JMM no1 already but I can understand people keeping Manny as no1 even if he loses to Hatton. It could be argued that he simply stepped too high up in weight. Look at the weight divisions he came from.
Cobbler, by saying you cant make your own rules, I am completly agreeing with you! If you believe in your heart that Ricky is the best fighter in the world regardless of weight, then fine. If you subjectively believe that then fine. Leach presents it as a passing of the title, which I cannot agree with.

I think that argument would work if you were talking about a single weight class. I also acknowledge that the P4P no1 never has a L in their last fight, but with the only contender to Manny and JMM being a distant and faded B-Hop, I cant see many options. Either Manny stays no1 or JMM becomes no1.

If we are going on The Rings rankings, which most people seem to go on, I'd be very surprised if Pac stayed number 1 after a loss to Hatton. I can't remember a Top 3 ranked fighter having lost his last fight, nevermind a #1. I think the'll suffle JMM up to #1 and Pac down to #2.

Having not read the article, it's hard to comment on what he actually says.

I think we're in agreement that beating the P4P number one does not automatically transfer the title to the victor.

However, people are going too far the other way and some seem to be taking the line that it is impossible to even consider Hatton being recognised as number one on the back of a win over Pacquiao.

There's a legitimate argument that a clear win for Hatton at least gives him a case for the number one spot (and you allude to this in one of your replies "with the only contender to Manny and JMM being a distant and faded B-Hop, I cant see many options"). If the only options are a guy who has lost to Pacquiao in recent times and a guy who was already ranked behind that guy, then why wouldn't someone who beats Pacquiao have a shout?

Now, personally, I have JMM currently number one (scored the last fight against Pac for him and feel he has the better wins since). I'm trying not to commit myself to hypotheticals too much - people talk too much crap before fights about what it will prove if such and such happens. I'll watch the fight, give it a few days afterwards to settle down and consider the issues then.

I disagree on one point mate. I dont think you can argue Ricky as no1 (as much as I like the guy) if he wins. Since Kostya Tszyu (sp?) he hasnt done enough to be considered that. I dont think a fight with Manny would do it, especially when Ricky is talking up his chances based on his physical advantages rather than his boxing skills. For example, hes saying he'll be too strong at the weight. Shouldnt P4P ignore physical advantages??

I don't think a win over Pac gets Hatton to #1 but I also don't think that Hatton should be penalized for trading on his physical strength to get the win rather than pure boxing skills. Any win against Pac should count for the same no matter how its achieved (within reason!), afterall Pac was up at welter for his last fight and Roach says he'll never make lightweight again.
