What happened to that guy who went to the Olympics with Burke, a heavyweight - and forgive me if I get his name wrong - something like Fola Okesola?

Mathew Ellis knocked him out in the ABA's..... he also KO'd David Starie in one..... Ellis was a Brilliant amateur. One of the best all round boxers i;ve ever seen. He just seemed to lose it when he turned pro. It was David Burke who went to the olympics Gaz.

Doh! Getting my Burkes missed up again! So many of 'em Stephen, David, Paul.... :nut

I remember Ellis had pretty big fanfare when he turned pro. He used to come to the ring like Roy Jones in a tux, surrounded by loads of birds. Maybe that's a part of the reason he didn't quite cut it, maybe not quite as focussed as he should have been.

I know Paul Burke very well too... though not seen him for many years.... Great guy and a lovely smooth boxer...Ellis should never have been a heavy IMO. He should have been a lightheavy or cruiser. This ld had talent to burn.

paul burke..seen him box in manchester 'beating' eamonn magee on points in a very controversal decision {mid-late 90's ??}...commonwelth title i think it was...magee beat him in a rematch a couple of years later....i remember that night well just as much for steve 'the viking' foster and all his supporters with viking helmets...howard eastman beat him that night though, and clinton woods was on the card too..but cant remember who else...

Yes remember the show.... It was a pretty awful fight. Eamon won the rematch pretty handsomly. Burke was really good though... he used to take me to phoenix gym and it was amazing.... Sparring with him was something else.

Yeah top boxer Paul Burke. His record is a virtual who's who of British lightweights at the time - Thaxton, Bernard Paul, Magee, Schwer, Barrett, Mendy and one of my favourite ever Brit fighters, Michael Ayers.

Oh, Mendy's not a Brit is he!
