Is British Boxing dying on its feet ? I dont mean literally dying but there's every chance that for the next few years we may be in a situation where we have no 'World Champions' It's not inconcievable that within the next 6 months Froch, Haye and Khan could all find themsleves without a 'World Title'. I know Haye doesn't actually own one now but a lot of hopes are resting on him bringing one back from Germany. What are the chances of Froch winning the tournament (because if he doesn't there is one champion down) ? What are the chances of Khan either avoiding the likes of Bradley/Hatton or him fighting them and his chin/defence holding up ? ( I know if Hatton beats him then its champ for champ for Britain but come on Hatton would punch above his station again and get K/O'd by an elite or he'd retire and vacate the belt) What are the chances of Haye, going to Germany and defeating Valuev, and in doing so then going on to defend his title in Germany against one of the brothers ? Who in Britain is on the verge of a realistic title win ? Jamie Moore, possible he could capture one soon although it needs to be against someone else than PW at this stage Craig McEwan, I dont see it at the moment Paul McLoskey, Once again I do not see him beating the likes of Bradley etc etc (I haven't seen a lot of Paul though to be fair, just not impressed with what I did see) Kevin Mitchell, Needs some defensive improvements before he thinks about Martinez (who is arguably the 'weakest' champ at the weight) Kell Brook, looks class and could be the next British star but he needs to first take care of jennings (no easy task) then have a crack at the European route IMO. Witter, gone Hatton, gone (could possibly get one but would vacate it or take on an elite (Marquez) and get sparked) Fury/Chisora, nowhere near that level Olympians, way off that level Clinton Woods, has a hard task infront of him first and will then struggle to beat the likes of Dawson, Hopkins, Tarver etc etc Cleverly, needs to take either the Euro/British route first and stop fighting bums (McIntosh was a step forward at least) Anthony Small, could do well but has to be challenging Moore before he gets to world level and that wont happen soon.Rendall Munroe too... Not to put a dampener on things lads, was just thinking of this, this morning, and would like to know your thoughts? PS. Bed at 4am work at 7:30am - MINT. Good job I never have to do no work and am known as Internet Dan :good
Our best fighter is arguabley Carl Froch. Then we have Haye and Khan. Yeah, its pathetic at the world level - three names. I'd like to see a few younger guys step up sooner, to fill the void. Throw Murray and Brook to the lions, I don't think its inevtiable they would fail.
Boxings becoming almost a curiosity from a bygone age in the world of sports. It's has to be only rivaled by curling as the sport with the least coverage in the press. It's no longer viewed as a viable career.
If Amir Khan can win a world title then Paul Mccloskey most certainly can but then he is Irish not British There's lots of talent either on the verge or coming through so there might be a bit of a gap where there are no British world champs but it looks good in the long term. Why didn't you mention Rendall Munroe? He should be getting a world title shot soon.
The problem is not lack of talent...there are too many young prospects coming through! More now than I've known since I started making a living from the business over 25 years ago. The problem is making the public care, creating the vibe and convincing people that they need to come out and support the fighters. I tried to do that on the Setanta show and I will do it when I take the show live. If you take any year from the last 25 and look at that year's top ten prospects, I guarantee that 2009 will stand out. Trust me. Adios.
We are not the biggest of countries so every now and then we will have a year or maybe 2 with no world champions. I think boxing in this country is still looking pretty good and the ones that will come through before the olympians and possibly win a world strap are brook, cleverly, and Mcewan. I think Froch and Khan are on borrowed time at world level.
Not the point Buncey, prospects wont equal titles for some years, thats all I was asking. Like I said mate, not dying literally just its possible for the next few years they'll be a gap where we could possibly have nothing
Good to hear. Who are your tips from our prospects to go on and have a serious shout at a world title?
1996-98 we had something like seven genuine world champions and seven genuine contenders. Now we have Froch who is game and proud but unlikely to reign a long time and vacant title claiment Khan. But at least we have a whole bunch of fighters who are 27-0. Maybe they can fight for vacant titles soon too.
I would like to add the Am's into the argument, Amatuer boxing in the uk is booming! we are in the top 3 nations in the world. Boxing couldnt be in better shape at the grass roots level, even at my two clubs,i get up to 40 training every night of the week. Boxing is,if anything a growing sport again, all we need to do is convince the broadcasters of this.
Niether is Puerto Rico. Its not even a proper country. And we have about 55 million more people than them.
