Just off the top of my head; Bellew, DeGale, Groves, Saunders, Gavin, Walsh and Quigg all have the potential to step up to the next level...
and our BEST too. :good TBooze we have had NO Other fighters as good as now (?) are you for real? Dear God at one time we RULED fro WEEMEN and have had GREATS in other weights throughout, of recent years we have a handful period. :deal
It's a myth about Murray referred to as British when it suits blah, blah, blah. Most Scottish sportsmen are referred to as that .. Scottish. It's English sportsmen who are constantly referred to as British, it's very rare you here them actually referred to as English.
If you mean world class level, some probably will, probably some won't. In the 1980s we had similar depth, or better. You remembered the guys who stepped up to world level, and possibly forgotten the rest.
Well Feeney went the distance with Ray Mancini and Howard Davis both a higher class than Ricky Burns, I don't think Burns would hold out any particular fears for him.
No, but he would of been more competitive I suspect. But I maybe wrong as I have not seen either fight.
That is the problem, we know all the fighters from the 80s and 90s who went on to be world class, we do not know who will in 2013. My point there seems to be a significantly more potential in the prospects of 2013 than in the 80s and 90s. Maybe that is biased, in that communication has improved and we get to see a lot more fighters than we used to. But I just look at the 70s, 80s and 90s and remember being grateful if we sneaked a bronze in the Olympics, many of which were boycotted. Yet in this era, we seem to have a significant amount of world class amateurs, that are now coming though the pro game, adding a depth I personally have not seen in my 39 year life time.
I was joking around mate, you must be confusing me with somebody else, yes I am Irish nationalist, but if you go to general section, you'll see me stick up for plenty of British fighters who are put under undeserved scrutiny, Amir Khan being one, and I was one of his biggest critics when he was being given soft touches at the beginning of his career (And I mentioned the British government..It's not like I don't take issue with most other western governments too, including the Irish one, hell, ESPECIALLY the Irish one) And I picked Cleverly to beat Kovalev...whoops And one last thing, I disagree completely with this thread, to call British boxing a joke, is a joke in and of itself, Britain has a great boxing history
Well, I appreciate the points you make, but the mere mention of Audley Harrison puts paid to any Olympics argument. I think we had a lot of talent in the 1980s. I do think the internet changes things though. I mean, if FW had George Collins go 35-0 now (as he did back in the late 80s), there'd be plenty of guys on here damn sure Collins is world class. He'd probably rank top 5 in the WBO.
Good thread even though I love seeing the hype geting exposed i'm getting bored with .Hopefully Burns returns and rematchs Beltran .We need another Calzaghe and Hatton .
You name Carl Froch and then accuse Brits of having glass jaws. Another ****ing moron, well done. :good
Our refs are some of the worst and our refs tend to be our judges and they are horrible at that as well.
