The hype for Froch/Kessler has been terrific and the sport has regularly been featured on TV, news websites, the radio and in the press. As great as the fight is for boxing fans, if this wasn't on PPV, there'd be nowhere near the amount of hype behind it that there is. The Sky marketing machine is able to get the sport into the mainstream, which is exactly where it needs to be if it's to grow in the long term and without that sort of hype, casuals will stay away from the sport but with it, it can grow and evolve. In an ideal world, we'd get the same hype without having to pay PPV prices but this simply isn't realistic. If it's a choice of PPV or not, then the sport will always be better if PPV is available because without it, a lot of these great fights just go under the radar. Imagine how big Froch's win over Bute could have been if it had been backed to the same extent that Froch/Kessler II has been hyped up. I know it's not a popular opinion but British boxing needs PPV. As long as it's not too frequent and the main events are good fights, having PPV events is the boost the sport needs. It's the perfect way to escape being a niche sport and be catapulted into the mainstream.
As long as there a good undercard, I never took an issue with PPV. A main event like Kessler v Froch should have 3-4 good fights on the UC. This has one....at a push.
Easy for the media machine to go into full mode when there is a lack of british sport on at momemt. for exaple if there was an english champions league final it wouldnt have had as much coverage.
As it has worked out picking this date for the fight was a smart move as nothing major is happening sporting wise in the uk at the month As for ppv , if the card is stacked then maybe , if not **** off
Do you know why the hype has been terrific..? To sell the fight to about 1 Million people. 1 Million people..? PPV needs to go.
Imagine if area titles where put on PPV, and the media machine was going ape**** over them. SKY NEWS REPORTS. "Within hours of the tickets going on sale for £5 - £25, 23 tickets have been sold! Eddie Hearn is stating that this fight is going to be the biggest fight since Benn vs Eubank!"...
I actually don't think the hype had been that great before Froch's outburst. As for PPV I don't think you could get away with it more than a couple of times a year.
I've barely seen mention of it outside of Sky, nor have I heard a single casual sports fan mention or ask about it. Absolute nonsense, and absolutely what I'd expect from a self-proclaimed Eddie fan. Your argument is completely daft - there's no point building hype where the product is behind an incredibly expensive pay wall available to a limited audience. The hype only matters if people can see the end product. More baseless logic. More people will have watched Froch beat Bute than will watch him fight Kessler, most likely. The sport would have been better if it didn't fleece fans for watching the best fights, especially when the only reason the purse is so high is because Eddie and Carl wanted it in the UK. Laughable.
PPV benefits Sky more than the customer. That's why it needs to go. Boxing, struggling to stay relevant, does not need to put more obstacles between it and fans than already exist.
DFTaylor doesn't have any mates, which is why nobody has been asking him about the fight. He only has 8 facebook friends.
Ah, a classic Rob post. Nothing to do with the actual points being discussed, which even if he does answer will be about completely different points, before he accuses me and others of knowing nothing about the sport/business/life. Of course, life is judged by how many Facebook friends you have. It's also absolutely logical that not only do I have no friends, I don't see anyone at work to hear them talk. it really is a hard life being me. It really is.
**** that PPV. they aint worth it even hardcores are not gonna pay for this and Froch has been on PPV a lot in the UK- a lot of unsuccessful PPVs may I add Now he is on a SKY ppv with a lot of backing and still wont sell **** I remember he started his career on the beeb, shouldve stayed mainstream
