You've not heard about it in the newspapers, local news or radio? I'm not sure what I can say about that because it's been extensively covered. Britain's largest newspaper, The Sun, have had a feature on Froch every day for a while now. It's been on the radio every day. It's been on various TV stations every day. It's been covered massively by the mainstream press. If you haven't seen it, I'm not sure why. The rest of your post is irrelevant. You're arguing that there hasn't been more hype when there clearly has been. It's like saying "Robert Guerrero is a better fighter than Mayweather" after their fight. If you think that the hype hasn't been much bigger for this fight, then there's not much else that can be said. And you accuse me of 'baseless' posts?
Have to disagree, Jack. The hype for this, for a PPV fight, has been low. On my Facebook feed and amongst my friends, there hasn't been a single mention of it. Whereas there was for bloody Mayweather-Guerrero the other week. Honestly, this event seems nothing compared to the fuss David Haye was kicking up back in when he was fighting Valuev, Ruiz and Wladimir. Even the Chisora fight on BoxNation created more hype than this. Those fights had people at work and everywhere else talking about it. I was guaranteed to get texts from casual followers asking when, where and how to watch the fights. But for this, nothing.
I've seen nowhere near the excitement for Haye's fight with Chisora. No one cares outside of a hardcore contingent. Mainstream pick-up has been miniscule. It hasn't. Well, considering how utterly you failed to comprehend my point, you might want to hold off on the emoticons. I didn't say there hasn't been more hype, I said it's a contradictory notion that more hype will build awareness and enthusiasm for the sport when only a tiny proportion will see the actual fight. What, people will say, "Oh, I bet that Froch-Kessler rematch was amazing, can't wait to watch Darren Barker fight a nobody since I missed that!"? Of course they won't. They just won't watch it. It's almost as stupid as "getting rid of all streams will increase pay per view buys".
Out of all of my friends on facebook its only genuine boxing fans or amateur boxers that I know that's talking about it, oh apart from somebody I know called Mike.
I thought DF nailed it in his reply to Jack. You want it to go mainstream? Get it on the BBC and ITV. I will pay if I feel the fight is worth it. I paid for Wlad/Haye, but to actually be happy about ppv? No offence but it's the attitude of a mug.
I'm not sure, mate. I think this fight has been covered far more by mainstream news outlets than any fight in the past couple of years. I'd say it's had more coverage than the Haye/Chisora build up, though the press conference fight they had was major news at the time. It's been on the radio and on TV so much in the past few days, and here are just a few articles from the past day or two. When was the last time so many major news sources covered a fight as extensively as this? http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9307123/carl-froch-expects-savage-battle-mikkel-kessler http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/may/24/mikkel-kessler-carl-froch-boxing http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/boxing/boxer-mikkel-kessler-says-carl-1908095 http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepag...h-Fast-Show-at-Londons-O2-tomorrow-night.html http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/boxing/carl-froch-mikkel-kessler-world-4013568 http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/boxing/carl-froch-vs-mikkel-kessler-1907662 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/boxing/22640687 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/ot...-of-super-middleweight-world-title-fight.html http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/bo...per-middleweight-unification-title-fight.html http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/boxing/22630044 http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...froch-can-flatten-mikkel-kessler-8631896.html http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/boxing/carl-froch-didnt-think-what-1909496 http://metro.co.uk/2013/05/23/carl-...o-kill-mikkel-kessler-ahead-of-fight-3806860/ http://www.itv.com/news/central/2013-05-23/mikkel-kessler-im-more-than-ready-for-carl-froch/ http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...ce-of-revenge-with-dream-rematch-8626084.html http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/oth...guy-but-itll-be-a-barbaric-fight-8626628.html http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/boxing/22621008 http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepag...ets-1500-fans-and-says-I-feel-invincible.html http://www.washingtonpost.com/sport...d7c638-c48e-11e2-9642-a56177f1cdf7_story.html http://www.dailystar.co.uk/intherin...h-is-cracking-up-ahead-of-their-London-clash/ http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/C...tory-19066748-detail/story.html#axzz2UFyndOIJ
The thing is though, having stories/articles pushed out there, doesn't necessarily mean the hype machine is working. For an event like this, it's very normal to have it being covered in all of the outlets you've listed. Even Khan's tune-up fight against Diaz got the same press space. But has it created the desired results - i.e. has it got the fans talking? Based on what I've seen so far, I would have to say no.
Presence is not the same as hype. Hype is not the same as visibility. Visibility doesn't automatically translate into sales.
Haye vs Chisora, was a unique fight. It sold its self by word of mouth on the street. I can remember listening in on these two old men, on the last train from from town. They where talking about Haye vs Chisora, and then going on about John Conteh. They where just drunk chatting to themselves. Haye vs Chisora was a bigger fight than Froch vs Kessler. Froch vs Kessler has been peoples down peoples throats! Sky Reporters have been filled in on probably who, Kessler is and what actually happened in the first fight! Nobody watched the first fight in Britain accept hardcore fans like us. Haye vs Chisora..? You had broadcasters trying to block it out, to the best of their ability!
I think the boxing landscape has changed a great deal since PPV was successful back in the 90's. For it to become viable and successful on a whole here the card's need to become like the Judgement Day cards back then. Or really major events and even match up a bill here with a bill over in the states. But even then maybe i'm clutching at straws. It's tough to see how it works in the long run but for major fights to be here it's needed somewhat. I don't feel this build up honestly has touched the public like others in yesteryear have. It's been decent but not on the major SBO level.
This guy really, really wants this fight to go against the grain and sell a lot of PPV's. He's strange.
