Just a thread about the state of the boxing scene in Britain.

What are your opinions about fighters that won their belts against faded champs due to 'timing' i.e Hatton v Tzuyu.

Fighters that win a strap (most of the time the WBO) and literally hold the belt to ransom i.e Calzaghe for 8 years was a sinner and now we have Ricky Burns.

Fights that the public crave for but never get due to promotional indifferences i.e Witter v Hatton, Calzaghe v Froch + Khan v Thaxton in recent times.

Paying £20 odd quid a month for the sky sports package (who then have the cheek to charge ppv for the likes of Khan v ***in), then extra for Premier, ESPN and the odd PrimeTime show.

Why are us fans treated with such distain?

British Boxing on a domestic level is doing just fine.

Always exciting fights, and plenty of beef.

We have just had Degale vs Grove, which was a EVENT first, and a fight second.

Chirsora vs Fury will be the same.........

    Bellew vs Cleverly........

These are not just one off fights, their beefs that could go on for years.

"And in return, dictate a whole new era of competitors"

Its just the nature of the sport mate.

Froch-Calzaghe was never really a goer and Hatton-Zoo is a scenario thats been played out many times over the years. An old champ loses to a guy he woud have beaten a few years earlier.

I think British Boxing's a fair bit better as of late with regards to fights being made domestically. Sky pulling socks up and showing some more International bouts etc.

Things will take time to improve and may and probably never go back to way we want them but least there's signs of improvement.

Your right i agree with your sentiments but these people don't care what we think sadly. It's just a business to them.....

I think that British Boxing in terms of the quality of fighters that we have and the fights that can be and in some cases are being made are as good as any other era.

As mentioned by PK there are some great domestic rivalries out there and I think plenty of potential in our prospects for some of them to become "world class"

I think it's wrong to write off Hatton's best performance as his career in this thread. The tactics employed and executed perfectly by Hatton that night were always going to give KT hell, even in his prime and it's no surprise that he didn't get off the shots to outbox or hurt hatton. Hatton could have walked through just about anything you threw at him that night and few could have coped with his relentless malling and swarming.

Boxing needs an international governing body like Uefa/Fifa in order for it to be a sport in which fans get what they want. Even with such an organisation, it would have problems running like other sports as there would be less opportunity for fighters to win titles and make money and so the number of pro's would probably go down.

Froch wasn't on Calzaghe's level when Calzaghe was active.

I think the way it's going this year, the trend is taking a different shape:

We've got Khan early on taking on the best or at least willing to.
    Froch is the same.
And David Haye is now taking on the best.

As for the fights that the public crave:

We've already had Groves vs Degale probably a little pre-mature in all honestly (when's the last time where 2 fighters with a combined fight total of 22 fights main evented on Sky Box Office?!)

Almost had Bellew vs Cleverly, probably will happen soon though.

    Murray vs Mitchell

    Fury vs Chisora

And as for 2012 Froch vs Cleverly, Khan vs Brook..... Watch this space!

Sorry guys this thread was a go at war-ren mainlyfor his ego that stopped hennesey fights, the fact all his champs hold ransoms to titles and the fact sky charge us 20 odd a month and then extra for some fights.

I feel like we are treated unfairly day in day out. Im walking away guys, completely had enough of the sport now as my frustration is just ridiculous. Floyd wants no part of pac, Arum dont wanna make fights with GBP, and Wa-rren is just a plain money grabbing **** (allegedly).

My favourite part is when Billy Nelson starts trying to justify why Burns is fighting Cook, he cant do so avoid the question with the response 'we just fight whoever is put infront of us' well it may as well be a blind fella with no arms cos Cook has near enough the same chance anyway...

Gonna give it till Haye v Wlad (only waited 2 years for this fight :( ) and then may just walk away from sport and forum, heck may even try abit of UFC cos atr least the tops guys get it on...

Hatton's best performance was against 'Money' May.

Just because Hatton lost to 'Money' May doesn't change that fact.

'Money' May is on a different level to Kostya Tzuyu.

The main thing that pisses me off at the minute is the number of imports, either from Africa or Europe to challenge for titles, that aren't as good as some British/Irish fighters that are currently parked up.

Jamie McDonnell said that Stuart Hall ''was a step backwards, he's ranked below me in the WBC'', yet faced a Ghanaian with six losses to less than stellar opposition.

Or Ricky Burns, our ''forgotten world champion'', who derailed a top 5 fighter to win his title yet faced two bums in his first two defences and is now facing a man who has had one fight in two years, against Yousaf al-Hamidi, a part time ice cream van driver.

I think on the whole things aren't that bad, but some minor and easy to implement changes would help us a great deal.

The investment put into the amateur game, to help with the Olympics, is really starting to help the pro game.

I would say the new generation of fighters are the best crop of fighters Britain has perhaps ever seen.

The pro game, quality wise, is as strong as it has ever been.

What hurts the sport is the lack of mainstream media that can turn these excellent prospects into genuine stars.

What a dozy post, to suggest that boxing and football's downfall is down to a liberal elite doesn't make any sense. Pro boxing is all about making a buck, with no support structure for fighters or even long-term forsight (hence PPV), it is purely capitalistic. If anything the boom in ticket prices for both sports has alot less to do with liberals and more to do with Thatcherism and a free market ethos where making a profit is all that matters.
