Mick Stanton suffered the same in the third round on Friday night. Agreed, rules need to be revisited!
Horse ****. Would you like me to educate you and supply a list of changes to the rules over the last 100 years? This rule in particular is out-dated and needs changed.
I am talking about the cut rule, it makes perfect sense in PROFESSIONAL boxing.... The crowd get a winner and if the defeat is considered unlucky both fighters sometimes get another pay day. It is a win/win situation. Boxing is a pretty basic sport, it does not need too much tampering with. Silly rule changes over the years have cost the sport, it was not that long a go the sport was a top four American sport and arguably second only to Football during the boxing season. An elimination of technical decisions added to the return of 15 round world title fights and same day weigh ins for world title fights (with part of the fight contract agreeing how weight should be lost by either fighter and an official being assigned to each fighter two weeks prior to the bout, to monitor that weight was being lost correctly); would be a way to start going back and getting some proper support back into this sport.
If caused by a punch then I understand BUT when any cut for any reason means an automatic win then it angers me.
Exactly...this rule wants throwing on the fire..... Why did Parris not stop the Khan v MAB fight earlier... simple.. he let ii go to the point where it was out of his control.... The Board should take a leaf from the Cotto fight last night..... :yepI think that the way that cut was managed was excellent..... When Hatton fought Maussa he should have given his purse to Mick Williamson that night... he is the reason that he kept his title.... I also think that if it was not Hatton that was fighting the the dcotor would have called it off much sooner IMO :yep
No, I just do not get why people are so steamed up over a perfectly fine rule that has worked well for over a hundred years. When I think what happened to Lloyd Honeyghan in the first Vaca fight, it baffles me that anyone could support the total ridiculous Technical decision rubbish!
I agree that the Honeyghan decison was wrong, but there's a world of difference between that and what happened on Saturday night. It should be up to the referee's discretion whether a fight is declared no contest.
Sorry T but how can you think what happened was fair. If you hate a Tech Draw. then If anything it should be a loss for the other fighter as he wasn't good enough to stop himself fouling ( intentional or otherwise ) I'm not saying thats how it should be but even that is farier than what we have just now !
I think the rule needs to be changed. Granted, the modern rule can be open to abuse, Zab Judah tried it on against Clottey.... was badly cut, on the way to losing by stoppage, so quit and take the chance on the cards. The thing I don't get is when the 'winner' of the fight holds his hands up in triumph, when all he has done is nut his opponent so badly the ref won't let it continue.
If the rules are to be changed there needs to be more instances where the doctor/ referee tells the fighter "You CAN continue" rather than just giving a fighter a way out like we saw with Calderon on Saturday.
Herbie Hide's loss was the first one I thought of. Herbie was winning easy and then got cut from a headbutt, guy was distraught at losing.
Yeah I thought of that too , It was one of the first times I'd actually witnessed that rule in effect , but Hide obviusly knew , you could see it all over his face. Like someone else said , what was with the dude celebrating away in the corner , There wasnt even a punch landed !
dont change the rule, just add contract clause in case of accidental butt ending fight rematch within six months and promoter and boxer face fine or short ban if rematch not given.board of control should like that as they could give out more fines
I remember when Matthew Hatton was stopped, but cannot recall whether it was a punch or a headbutt, and it was the most ridiculous stoppage EVER. Mick Williamson turned snow white and even the doctor argued with the referee, but alas, to no avail! Made Calzaghe vs Manfredo seem like the famous Michael Sprott loss, where the ref just won't jump in.
