this was a brit documentary on jones back in 2000 where some writers and fighters comment on jones on if he's lb for lb the best. (steve collins was particularly comical) most of the writers give their opinion on how jones would have done vs benn, eubank and collins. calzaghe was three years into his wbo title run in 2000 and he's not even mentioned once. why do you think he was left out of the documentary made by his own people? (for calzaghe fans this is a rhetorical question) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbqwGz7xkkU[/ame]
Maybe that time he doesn't have that impact. I mean, people started talking about him a big deal after beating Lacy onwards/
you're right but most on these boards talk about him like he's an atg. wouldn't a great fighter be mentioned as an opponent for jones especially when he's in the midst of his title run? this shows how he was thought of then, even by the brits.
Because these days the Brits love to throw random British names out there in order to make it look like Jones' resume is lacking because he missed out on their epic talents.
If they did a similar doc on Floyd today you better believe they would mention Khan. That goes to show the british media has really turned into a hype machine over the years. Imagine how much hype a 25 yr old Calzaghe would get today.
haha! in all fairness, all those guys (collins, eubank, benn and calzaghe) could fight but none of them were going to beat jones at super middle. anyone not lying to themself understands this.
You tell me. According to you guys this is when Joe ducked Roy and waited for him to get old. I haven't watch it, but it's clear that Benn, Eubank and Collins were Roy's main rivals from over here. Roy was very close to fighting Benn and Collins. Maybe they thought Joe who is a few years younger, wasn't ready. Maybe they left him out because he wasn't relevant to the film. I don't know. But you are right, it's surprising Calzaghe wasn't mentioned at all.
They'd mention Khan because winning an Olympic silver medal at 17, as well as being our ONLY boxer at those Olympics made him a big deal. Khan has already unified a divison too. 25 year old Calzaghe - hadn't even fought Eubank. 25 year old Khan - Olympic silver, unified champ. Not sure what your point is? Khan exploded onto the scene via the 'Olympic Wonderkid' tag. Calzaghe was much more of a slow burner type. Even after the Eubank fight he wasn't particularly well known.
Calzaghe was 25 when he beat Eubank. Guys like Cleverly, Mitchell or Groves did not win olympic medals yet were/are hyped by the british media. If you can't see that british fighters are being more heavily promoted these days then I can't help you.
