Thought I would win Hugger of the year based on my devotion to Smoking Joe Ajose Olusegun the Gun. Must obviously do better next year.

I don't really think I've been the best poster this year. Rude, abrasive, generally surly and cynical. But I guess my enthusiasm for the old timers is appreciated by some, so it means I've done what I set out to do, which is make sure these dudes get their dues :good

It was deserved, like Mand when you get into a discussion Its hard to compete, your overall knowledge is second to none, you talk about fighters sometimes I never even knew existed and I must say It catchy, Iv'e started to read a bit more and watch available footage of certain fighters, good stuff mate. :good

 

I still have to lot to learn, believe you me! I get smoked all the time of the Classic :deal And sometimes on here, don't worry about that!

As for discovering fighters you might not be aware of, just done a new Encyclopedia article...it's a bit heavy But the videos are of the highest calibre, highly recommended :good

Ive nearly finished History of Boxing by Peter Arnold, Good book it focuses on a lot of old skool fighters, I found it in my Mums loft, It must have been my Dads, its dated Oct 1988 the Harry Greb piece in it is very good.

 

Thought the revisionists for Greb came out later than that, interesting.

HARRY GREB

Harry Greb was a natural fighter- a rough, tough battler who stepped into a ring 294 times in 13 years. Outside the ring he eschewed training and lived life to the full. As a fighter he also got on with it- a boxer who ignored defence and went straight into non-stop attack. Delivering punches from all directions with flailing arms, he earned the nickname 'The Human Windmill'. He was not too fussy about where some of his blows landed, and was frequently booed as a villain.
Greb was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania on 6 June 1894. He loved scrapping from an early age, and was a professional boxer before his 19th birthday. Although only a middleweight he challenged Gene Tunney for the light-heavyweight championship of America, and gave Tunney a stone (14lb-6.3kg) and a battering, breaking Tunney's nose in the first round and putting him in bed for a week. Tunney later beat Greb four times-half the total defeats Greb suffered in the ring. Greb also fought heavyweights, and earned a victory over Bill Brennan, who challenged Dempsey for the world title.
Greb won the world middleweight title on 31 August 1923 when he beat southpaw Johnny Wilson on points. He defended the title 6 times, the best win coming against Mickey Walker in 1925. After this fight, Greb and Walker met in a New York restaurant, and words outside on the pavement led to blows, the police stopping the rematch.
Greb finally lost his title to Tiger Flowers in 1926, and failed to regain it in a return. He was then 32 years old and had been fighting for sometime with the sight of only one eye. Later in the year he entered hospital for an operation on the other, and the man who was so seldom stopped in the ring died under the anaesthetic.
