It sounds as though Lippi is planning on playing Claudio Marchisio behind a main striker, who is most likley to be Pirlo I'd guess. Maybe Iaquinta

Not sure who will be on penalty duty but Gillardino was the top scorer in qualifying with only 4 goals (3 of which were in the same match against Cyprus). I'm not sure Italy will score enough in the competition to have the Golden boot winner.

Fabiano is my main bet for top scorer but I'm looking for a bit of value to have a couple of quid on.

I did question myself for including last group game results. It's a trade off between getting good value before any of the teams have had the chance to impress versus the possibility of teams not going all out for the win as you say. Could even be the case that Holland, or any other team, would prefer to finish second in their group to give themselves a preferred team for the next round. i.e. It might look odds on that Italy will finish second in their group before Holland play their last game and so Holland might intentionally throw their last game to finish runners up in the group.

Looks like I could have been well off the mark suggesting Pirlo might start for Italy. He's not even listed in the Golden boot competition on Bet365. :patsch

Not sure I'm going to bother having a go on this but Van persie and Millito look decent value at 18/1 and 33/1 respectively.

There'll usually be someone that scores a couple of doubles or a hat trick in the group games and it then takes some catching to go past them for the boot so look for a team you think could pick up a convincing win in the group games.

Yep, thats always my thinking. It puts me off Fabiano a little but I think I'll stick with him.

    Pirlo is a midfielder mate.

    Maybe you mean Pazzini?

Not sure who will start for Italy. Gilardino could be the one. They usually play one up front and take one off for the other after sixty minutes or so.

Cacau or Podolski could be worth a gamble. Germany's group isn't the toughest and I expect them to go fairly deep in the competition (although they could get turned over by Argentina at the Quarters if they meet) and these two usually get the goals.

Any team that goes all the way have a good shout at having the Golden boot winner in the side so it's not a bad bet having Fabiano, although he wouldn't be my pick.

The bookies seem to think it will be Gilardino starting for Italy.

    :lol::good

Yeah I had read that he had a shout at starting a while back but checking the betting again (and looking for Pazzini this time instaead of pirlo :patsch) it doesn't look like he will be. Gilardino is the shortest priced Italian, in from Iaquinta who started out shortest.

Checked on Italy's team news and it still sounds as though Marchisio will be playing behind a lone striker but no clue as to who the striker will be.

Who started in their last match?

Check out Bellucci Nadal in the tennis if you're bored.

See what the pattern of play is on Bellucci's serve. If Nadal is averaging more than 30 on Bellucci's serve chances are you could make some money backing Nadal to win the next point every time.

Won a lot betting this in clay court competitions.

. . .maybe not. Nadal is odds on even against serve for each point.

Made £20 betting Bellucci for each point on the Nadal serve. :s 3 breaks in the last 5 games on Nadal's serve.

Not sure. The last time I saw them play was the group game with Ireland when Gilardino scored. I think he came on as sub for Iaquinta.

Well, Steve Claridge is ending a great year with some World Cup tips. Make the most of it because from here on Mark Lawrenson takes over:

He picked out Serbia (10/11) and Denmark (evens) as decent value to qualify from their groups. Same goes for Brazil TO WIN their group - 8/13.

His picks for winners of each group:

    A - Mexico (10/3)
    B - Argentina (8/15)
    C - England (4/11)
    D - Serbia (10/3)
    E - Holland (8/13)
    F - Italy (8/15)
    G - Brazil (8/13)
    H - Spain (3/10)

He mentioned some other bets like 'Highest scoring group' and said Argentina's group because anything can happen with Maradona etc.

I'd be tempted to lay against France to win their group(evens). They're 1/3 to qualify which is too short. They could well be an early casualty:think

few things i like the look of:

Holland to get to the quarters 4/6
Germany to get to quarters 5/6

    Holland to beat Denmark 4/6
Brazil to beat Ivory Coast 4/6

Pat Barry to beat Mirko Cro Cop 4/6
