I certainly agree with your point regarding bowlers.

A batsman's cause is also aided by the improvements in bat technology and shorter boundaries - a point Mark Taylor has raised on several occasions.

Average batsmen now average 40.

Excellent players of yesteryear (say pre-2000) averaged in the 30's and had long careers - Gatting, Atherton, etc..... Mark Waugh is an ATG (IMO) and he only averaged 42. A guy who averaged 50 was considered extra special.

These days a guy averaging 50 is generally considered merely a very good player, with an average of 55 over a very long career being the benchmark now.

 

Not sure I agree with this at all. The reason Gatting and Atherton have averages in the thirties is that that is how good they were. Plenty of their contempories have averages that place them in the true world class category that neither genuinely reached. Gatting you are especially overrating as his average is padded by lots of matches against Indian and Australian teams with fairly weak bowling attacks (particularly fast bowling). Gatting averaged 15 against the West Indies, the premier bowling side of his era.

Ponting and Sangakkara may have the 13th and 14th best test averages of all time, but everyone above them in the list retired before 1975. Hardly conclusive evidence that present day batting is so much easier...

 

I'd say it definitely is, but everyone is welcome to their opinion.

He attacks more, its a world cup year and he has a very stern player in Cana beside him so expect to see him venture forward. Injury permitting he is gonna be starting almost all games so I think this is good value


Bent @ 10/11 to score 11 premier league goals. Injury permitting this is a good value bet. Again, World Cup year and he wants to be on the plane. He scored 18 league goals the last WC year but still didn't get on. In 4 premier league seasons he has only scored less than 11 on 1 occasion, his first at Spurs when they still had Berba, Keane and Defoe

Service wont be excellent at Sunderland but then I dont recall Fabregas playing for Charlton those two seasons he was there and he still scored well
