SHOT boxing champion James Oyebola — blasted in the face for asking thugs to put out a cigarette — lost his fight for life last night.
The former British heavyweight title-holder had earlier stunned doctors by responding to tests against all the odds.
But the 47-year-old, who had been shot three times, died last night. James — blasted twice in the head and once in the leg — had been on a life-support machine.
Consultants had revealed that just one side of the dad of two’s brain had been affected, raising hopes of survival without brain damage.
There had even been signs of nerve movement yesterday after doctors did a tracheotomy to help his breathing.
His devastated family had said they were “encouraged” by his progress.
James’s partner of 15 years Malin Bergstrom, 37, and their school-aged children, Crystal and James, had kept a bedside vigil. The family’s solicitor, Scott Ewing, said James died at about 8.30pm.
He added: “It’s obviously a massive shock, as we had had positive signs earlier today. We are all shocked and upset.
“Crystal is very subdued because she’s older. James is just bewildered. They are both very upset. To shoot someone in the face for asking them to stop smoking is incredible.”
The 6ft 9in Commonwealth Games medallist asked three black men to stop smoking in the early hours of Monday at his pal’s club, Chateau 6, in Fulham, South-West London. Four shots were fired and the trio fled.
Yesterday boxing promoter and pal Frank Maloney appealed for information. He said: “James was simply one of the most polite men you could meet, dedicated to his children and helping the young.
“To anyone who knows anything — it is not grassing. We do not need people like this on our streets.”
