Back in the day I always rooted for European fighters and was always hopeful for someone from Great Britain because I thought they had some decent trainers and good fighters from the lower weights

I remember a lot of the American magazines, even some of the British newsletters and papers suggesting that British heavyweights were chinny, Now we know his chin was not one of Lewis's best traits but not sure if it was his chin or his recuperative power that allowed him never to get off the floor to win. Henry Cooper lost on cuts most of the time when he lost but he was KO'd flat by Patterson but I would not call him chinny for the most part

Richard Dunn, Brian London,Jack Bodell could be called chinny and Frank Bruno had his very chinny and stiff moments vs Bone crusher Smith and Witherspoon. Cockel showed a decent chin or great heart vs Marciano

Now we have the big Giant David Price and Price has shown to be chinny in the amateurs

Was Joe Bugner the best of British raised in the chin department?

Is this British Heavyweight chin thing an American Myth? and if so give some solid chin examples

Or is it true, if so why

    Bit of an American myth.
Farr and Bugner had decent chins.
    Cockell was respectable.

That is a myth, look at his record. Cooper's problem was getting knocked out and outpointed. From September 1956 onwards, only Ali stopped him on cuts. In that time Cooper was Dq'd once, outpointed three times and knocked out four times...

Problem is for every Farr and to a degree Bugner, there were plenty of Dunn's, Gardner's and Currie's...

the British press was hardest on itself for criticism, it's just the British way, slagging oneanother, having a go and so on, it is often passed off as fun or having a laugh, but thats only true in 'close' circles. We Brits rip people to bits, because there is a very real disregard and willful jealousy and contempt for others.

Its all very strange too, because Nationlly there is no greater support for all things English, but privately there is a very real and pugnant ill towards oneanother, years of struggle & poverty and Class division.

anyway that said, there is a point to this, we did ourselfs No Favour, so that Yanks had freepress to follow suit. But the very serious FORCED upright British fighting style was the main killer for our Bigmen, as I said years ago.

It was FORCED to fight 'upright' because a Foul or Lowblow was INSTANT DQ and British Pride wouldn't give into dropping that rule till the 60s I think it was, even though there were lots of people vying for the American Way, accidental was forgivable, and anything more was a points deduction, the way it always should have been.

our Bigmen were wasted for not being aloud to fight as rugged or mix it without a certain 'built in' restrain (FEAR), in case of DQ. So spend a career like this and go Stateside and get hammered, Britain eventually seen the scense in the American Way and changed the Rule.

But British Pride truly affected our fighters for years in this regard, before we gave in and changed it.

It may have begun with Bombadier Billy Wells, who was chinny and of course Phaintin' Phil Scott wasn't too sturdy either especially when he wasn't writing on the canvas screaming 'foul'. These two may have started the whole thing.

I agree with scartissue, Bombadier Billy Wells was probably the originator.

was he bleeding in those fights though (I really am asking, i dont know).

it makes it easier to get knocked out if you have blood running into your eyes and you dont see punches coming..and of course that would make it easier to be outpointed.

good analysis, could have been the upright style...I did not want to blame it on the water as I have read as a reason ...in a tabloid joke

He seemed to be solid vs Bugner but again Big Joe was not a monstrous puncher and Henry showed his experience...He was a bleeder, I wonder if he was blinded and then KO'd ...he was a gritty old Bloke as they say overseas

Some fights he was cut, the is little disputing his wafer thin skin. But Cooper and his team developed tactics to deal with the problem. Cooper was often cut in British title fights (the Walker bout being a famous instance) but always (58-71) won. But when he did step up to the next level, as I stated previously, he was often found out, cut or not.

Bugner was Hungariam and Lewis, Mason and Bruno were not ethnically British. Farr had a good (celtic?) chin though.
