Only taking into account performances over the last 18 months or so, how does your british p4p list look??? 1. Joe Calzaghe – Beat Kessler and Hopkins and is clear british p4p no 1 2. David Haye – Unified the cruiserweight division beating Maccarinelli and Mormeck, on top of the blowout of Bonin and the gritty win over fragomeni 3. Ricky Hatton – failed to beat the world p4p number 1 at a weight which does not suit him at all, but still has done enough over the last 18 months to be number 3 with the wins over castillo and urango 4. Junior Witter – a career best performance against Harris, but a distracted showing against Bradley 5. Enzo Macc – a decent hardworking win over Braithewaite sandwiched between two pointless fights in Bobby Gunn and Azzoui 6. Alex Arthur – good performance against Gogoladze, not great against Foster but got the job done 7. Amir khan – the matchmaking might be careful but with 7 wins in the last 18 months, including Limond, Earl and St Clair, he makes number 7 in my list 8. Clinton Woods – in a pretty inactive 18 months, he’s had a hard fought win over Gonzales but showed his lack of world class against Tarver 9. Carl froch – good win over tatevosyan followed by two pointless ones 10. Colin lynes – excellent wins over Morrison, Mutley and Tolppola – hopefully he’ll come away with another win on Friday and then move up to the next level. 11. Kevin Mitchell – great win over Carl Johanesson following a few pointless matchups 12. Rendal munroe – impressive win on the backfoot against martinez, followed by an awkward defence against that crazy frenchman. Could have big potential at this weightclass 13. Gavin Rees –unexpected win over beltholder mbaye, but showed he’s levels below world class when being outboxed by kotelnick 14. Ian napa – the coolest 5ft 1 guy in the world has easily outboxed everyone he’s been in with since his failed attempt at the EBU and beaten a couple of my least favourite boxing personalities (haskins and power). 15. John Duddy –scraped by with wins over Bonsante, Eastman and a dodgy decision against Smichet, and blown away a couple of guys who shouldn’t have been in the ring with him
1. Joe Calzaghe 2. David Haye 3. Ricky Hatton 4. Junior Witter 5. Carl Froch 6. Amir Khan 7. Enzo Maccarinelli 8. Clinton Woods 9. Alex Arthur 10. Kevin Mitchell 11. Rendall Munroe 12. Jamie Moore 13. Darren Barker 14. Nicky Cook 15. Michael Jennings Honourable mention: Ryan Rhodes Duddy is Irish. I tend to lean towards p4p skills and h2h rather than completely towards achievements as I get into the lower reaches of my list. On achievement Rees should be in there, but I do not truely believe that p4p he is a better fighter than any of the above. He got lucky.
i'm going off level of opposition and progress over the last 18 months. in that time khan has won the commonwealth, beaten a (shot) domestic rival in earl, beaten a euro level fighter in the dane, and comfortably beaten a former world champ. i'm not saying he's world class, but p4p, for me he deserves to be ranked higher than the likes of froch and woods.
over the last year and a half, hatton has had three fights and won two of them against good opposition. in the same time, haye has beaten the linear champion and unified by beating another top 3 cruiserweight. of course p4p is subjective, but i'm using the last 18 month thing to give an idea of what the current position of our boxers is.
1. Calzaghe 2. Hatton 3. Haye 4. Witter 5. Woods 6. Froch 7. Arthur 8. Khan 9. Macarinelli 10. Mitchell 11. Rees 12. Napa 13. Lynes 14. Lockett 15. Moore
1. Hatton 2. Haye 3. Calzaghe 4. Woods 5. Witter 6. Maccarinelli 7. Arthur 8. Khan 9. Froch 10. Lynes 11. Jennings 12. Barnes 13. Moore 14. Cook 15. Mitchell
Yeah, I just realised my mistake there, it was off the top of my head gimme a break :yep Just knock Jennings down to honourable mention and stick him at 15. On achievement he'd be higher, but he's just too straight up, 123 ABC for me to consider him any higher. It's easy to knock Jennings off, they are similar fighters, but I suppose Lynes has a better resume.
I couldn't rate a commenwealth champ above recent world champs. He has potential to become a world champ but he aint there yet. Ergo Woods & Rees should be above him, as should Froch. Not his fault no one will go through on a fight with him. He's been fighting above Khan's current level for sometime. Frankly I'd have Woods ahead of mac too.
woods has had two fights in the last 18 months labouring to one victory and getting completely outclassed in the other.. rees victory against mbaye looks good on paper but when you take into account mbayes performance on the night and the lack of competition he provided, that win is downgraded somewhat in my opinion. if khans fight against the dane had been for a vacant wbo belt would he suddenly be higher in a p4p list just because he'd won a belt?
