There has been a fair bit of chatter this weekend with regard the stoppage of the Elcock vs McDermott fight because of a cut - and the fact that Elcock was adjudged to be the winner despite the fact that the cut was caused by a headbutt rather than an actual 'scoring' punch. In previous weeks there have been controversial decisions in fights where the referee is the scoring judge as well - and I would like the opinions on whether it is time for us to adopt the rules applied by the respective commissions in America, whereby if a fight is stopped in the first four rounds because of a cut should be deemed a no-contest, and whether scoring judges should be appointed to assess the action from ringside for all fights, from unification to the small undercard fight. Your thoughts please......
The fight was stopped prematurley because the corner should have been allowed to work on it during the rounds christ look at hatton v thaxton.
The Hatton cut against Thaxton was as bad a cut as I have seen in a fight allowed to continue - that was one hell of a fight, and would come close to being in Ricky's top five performances IMO.
this is something that i've argued for years. the board of control are stuck in the dark ages on this one. bring the rules into line with the rest of the world. :deal
It is obviously farcical to award a guy a stoppage win for a headbutt. It might be accidental, but you are almost encouraging guys to try sneaky headbutts with this rule.
I bet Carlos Maussa and Bernard Hopkins wish they were British! Totally agree, a guy shouldn't get a stoppage win for nutting someone.
I cannot believe people are serious about this. The BBB of C is spot on, and the rest of the world should change their silly technical decision rule.... The British way of doing it is the best. If you get cut due to a deliberate foul, and the fight needs to be stopped, the ref can Dq the offender. If it is an accidental headbutt, then it is bad luck, it worked for 100's of years before, why fix what is not broken?
What are your thoughts on scoring judges, then?? I see your point and therefore we should see more DQ's for headbutts
I do not like referees scoring bouts, as the two purposes of the referee should be to enforce the rules and even more importantly the safety of the two fighters, he should not also be trying to score the fight. Personally I think all fights up to British title levels should be scored by a sole judge, ringside, as this would help smaller promoters with costs. All title fights from British level upwards should have three judges, as should all contests of 10 rounds or more involving a fighter outside of the United Kingdom.
Good shout about a sole ringside judge. I would imagine some fights are pretty easy to score from within the ring, but when watching the undercard bouts on Friday Fight Night I struggle to see where some of the scoring comes from!
