over 12 rounds i'd go with smith.

i'm not convinced about degales punch resistence (i remember him hanging on in the later rounds in some am fights!) and i'm not sure he's ready for a 12 rounder yet.

fighters nowadays just don't have the depth, nor do they have as tough careers.

MOST of them do not prove themselves against enough top opposition. They have more weights/belts to contest for and their ascent to the top is not as ardous, they don't have to fight everyone to be considered the 'best'.

So, would SOME fighters beat old timers? Of course, styles make fights.

But do they deserve a more lofty rating due to their apparent improved conditioning and technique (watch Tunney, Louis, Gavilan and Canzoneri to see examples of older fighter that are technically superior to any of their respective counterparts in today's divisions, if you watch them you'll see) or do the people that showed consistency and talent in far more fights, against many rated opponents and fighting for THE World title in less divisions that were far more packed (this is fact)

In short, no, though the likes of Sweet Pea, Jones, Hopkins are awesome
talents that would beat the best from any era (there will obviousy be some bad stylistic match-ups that we could find for them) and they are rated accordingly.

Two examples for you: Carl Froch and Ricardo Mayorga? Successful? To an extent, definitely.

'Gatekeepers' are not people who sell out stadiums based solely on who they are.

 

Hatton was the number 1 fighter in the Light-welter division just last year, and lost to the P4P number 1 fighter, but he is now suddenly a gatekeeper even though he is still, by most people, considered the 2nd best fighter in the division? :tired

Edner Cherry, Herman Ngoudjo and Nigel Wright (on the domestic scene) are examples of gatekeepers in the division - not Ricky Hatton.

There is also no way to argue he is 'the greatest lightweight of all time'. Ike Williams, Roberto Duran, Carlos Ortiz would all beat him.

 

Off topic slightly, but how do you reckon he'd fair against Sweet Pea?

My lightweight rankings read Duran #1 with Sweet Pea #2 but head to head I'm not sure how a Floyd v Sweet Pea fight would go down (other than being a not too great a spectacle).

On another Floyd point, is his record deep enough at lightweight for him to be even mentioned in all time lightweight lists? What did he have about four fights there? Is not easier to rate his acheivements at super feather?

 

Sweet Pea is the WORST stylistic matchup I can find for Floyd.

He can pressure, he can box, he's more defensively adept (arguably) and has the chin and far superior and constant jab to dominate Floyd. People forget that Pea could fight as well as box.

You see, I'm bordering on the fact that Floyd hasnt really met another technician in the ring. The two closest fights Floyd had came against a good jab (DLH) and a smart pressure fighter (Castillo). Which leads me to think that Duran would take him to school.

Step into the unknown against Sweet Pea, no clue at all as to how that would go down. Agree that Whit's defensive prowess often overshadows his other strengths, but still I think Duran is a tougher opponent (both because he was that good and in terms of style) for Floyd than Sweet Pea.
