Similar threads will have no doubt been done before, but since the announcement of Hurd-Welborn, it got me thinking about Brits in world title fights. I can’t think of another Brit who fought for a world title, that is facing a challenge as difficult as the one Welborn is about to. There’s been some mismatches in hindsight, but what comes close to this? Let’s say since 2000...
Yeah for the WBO. Eventhough the fighters were world class, for me Khan vs Canelo and Brook vs GGG were ridiculous mismatches.
Those were due to size. GGG and Canelo were better fighters in general, but there was not as big as a gap in talent as say Canelo-Hatton.
Alvarez vs Matthew Hatton. Alvarez was campaigning at the 150lb mark back then. GBP was hoping to get him a title fight at 147 and then move up to 154. Pacquiao vacated his WBC 154lb belt and the WBC sanctioned it for Alvarez-Hatton(the fight had been already signed). This was the second time in a row the WBC vacant 154belt had been contested for at 150lbs. And Alvarez missed the agreed upon weight.
