Guys, it isn't as if Carwin is some slouch at takedown defense. He may not be AS good a wrestler as Lesnar, but usually in MMA you don't have to be as good a wrestler to avoid takedowns as you need to be to execute takedowns. Carwin was a NCAA division 2 champion after all. Lesnar took Carwin down when he got the opportunity. Also, to all of you that say "Lesnar can take a shot or two" I think that isn't quite giving him enough credit. Carwin is probably the single hardest puncher in MMA right now and he weathered him longer than anyone else. Also, to all that say "Wow I am shocked that he is so humble now he must have changed," there is an enormous possibility that he was always like that he was just trying to sell tickets the best way he knew how, the WWE way. Damn Lesnar was impressive and it's amazing to see like, for real HATERS come out of the woodwork after this fight. Fedor, though obviously greater, was never totally shitted on after an astounding come from behind victory like Lesnar has been.
I saw it differently mate, I didn't think it was a case of gloating and baiting each other, I think it was a gesture of mutual respect. Before the fight Lesnar was saying "I don't even view Shane Carwin as a threat - at all". I think Shane was winking at him to say "I have earned your respect now, I am a threat, though I acknowledge you are tough as ****ing nails to be be coming back out for more", and Brock smiled back to say "Props to you for getting me in all that trouble, but this round is going to be a different ball game". That's why I think there was no bad blood after the fight, both guys earned each others' respect. That was my own interpretation of it anyway. You could see at the start of the 2nd round that they respected each other.
Nope. I saw him hit by punches by the biggest banger in the game, show enormous balls to ride it out, then choke his opponent out. I saw a champion behave like a champion. He needs to work on his stand-up for sure, as it was pretty woeful, but to belittle his achievement last night is pathetic.
before the fight i couldn't stand lesnar now iv got alot more respect for him! he defended well on the ground tho and not alot of shots got him and the uppercut that got him just grazed him so im still not sold on his chin but defo got some heart!
Biggest puncher is a huge overstatement. Both Carwin and Brock looked amateurish tonight in their standup game. Someone like Overeem/Fedor would have knocked Brocks head clean off. I dont even think both those guys know how to kick. Is this supposed to be MMA or some limited forms of MMA? Brock was in huge trouble and didnt seem to know what to do. He was truely garbage on his back, garbage standing up and he basically turtled up like Frank Mir. The only thing that saved Brock was Carwin running out of gas.
Carwin is the heaviest puncher in the UFC heavyweight division, if you are talking about sheer brute force. He is the biggest banger in the game. Sure Brock has massive holes in his game, he always has had and probably always will have, but his overall effectiveness is beyond question. No-one would have an easy night with him if he came in with the right gameplan.
Major props to Brock for his performance last night. Coming into the fight I expected him to get knocked out but the will and resolve he displayed in weathering the storm against Carwin and finding a way to win impressed me to no end. Say what you want about his skill set but the guy certainly has the inner-workings of a champion.
I thought Lesnar looked liked ****. Yeah he won but he got his ass kicked in that fight. Carwin is a better fighter than Brock but his stamina sucks. Brock has a weak chin and thin skin. Carwin didn't land his best punch. That uppercut that put Lesnar down did not land that great. Lesnar does have a heart but he just is not all that skilled. He can't fight on his feet worth a ****. Brock better be thankful Carwin was not in shape.
The flip side is that Brock tried to stand with Shane, which is Brock's weakness. If next time he concentrates fully on making it a wrestling/grappling match, he could win easier in a rematch. Brock doesn't necessarily have to become well-rounded to become a great fighter, he just has to work to his own strengths better.
Years of anabolic steroid abuse leaves me to question his MMA achievements, whether he is clean now or not.
I don't think he is. I'm not sure what kinda testing UFC does but my guess is that they could care less if you use steroids or not. Brock is still using steroids.
I might be the only one who wasn't impressed. He showed me he is basically Mark Coleman in a bigger body. He has heart, but he has no skill standing up. I saw something different than most of you guys, I saw Brock Lesnar's punch resistance beat Shane Carwin's endurance.. Hardly impressive. I think Brock will have his hands full with Cain.
I really enjoyed reading the opening post of this thread. Everything was well-put. You should consider doing articles for the site (if they'd take an MMA article). I'm not a Brock Lesnar fan, but he deserves much credit for this victory. He did show guts and heart as well as a solid chin. I haven't seen the fight, but it sounds like he took quite a beating before coming back and finding a way to win and that's what champions do. I'd kind of like to see a rematch.
