Poorer striking? When I watch a lot of older MMA they appear to throw wider, flashy looking arm punches.

Also the lack of weight classes in the very early days? Cutting weight is well known to effect punch resistance.

This word 'evolution' can be largely attributed to Rogans weed session and his partner in crime goldilocks. There's a huge case that says otherwise when taking into account the evidence.
If anything the sport has devolved and regressed. Because the level of talent has thinned in respect of fighters backgrounds. Where as in the past fighters hailed from a particular discipline and pursued that to the highest professional level this is no longer the case.
The merging of the martial arts has now produced a 'new' MA where fighter are average at everything rather than great at one thing and then using other skill sets to compliment their bread and butter.
If Brock JDS Cain and co represent the evolution of MMA then this sport has surely regressed. The reality is all we are seeing is 'new' blood and a changing of the guard. But the fact the veterans are still VERY competitive at the highest level proves empirically that the sport has not evolved.

But surely the striking defence has improved, since the sport has ''evolved'' as well :huh

And there's been weight classes in MMA since 1997

Watch the early UFC and PRIDE fights and then come back and tell me about poorer striking. When was the last time you saw GnP on the equivalent of Vovchancyn? Coleman? or Kerr? When was the last time you saw a bout as brutal as Wand vs Rampage? Or Igor vs Inoue? When was the last time you saw a fighter dumped on his head (Nog and Fedor) and come back to win via sub? When was the last time you saw a guy like Sakuraba who is now infamous for his ability to take punishment? The striking in MMA now is WORSE. That's a fact.

As for the weight cut no not seeing it. Successful heavys in the early days of the size and height that we see now were rare. If anything the fighters are certainly bigger. But NOT better.

I don't and if you knew me, You'd know I'm not a UFC fanboy. I love loads of old fighters from Pride but Dan fought back in the early UFC days.To be fair I don't know much about Severn's wrestling and I was wrong about that but I still think Brock would be too big and too explosive for Severn.

There are still some like Nick Diaz, Chris Leben etc. but I think the reason is because for the most part guys today like Jon Jones are more athletes than fighters. If you get what I'm saying, not that they aren't fighters because obviously they are but just that it has become more of a sport than it was back in the day.

Edit: I actually agree with EL BULLY.

The fighters in Pride were willing to take more punishment, It was more like a schoolyard brawl than a sport or maybe somewhere in the middle but not it the sport has evolved into what it is today.

I wouldn't classify Leben as tough. He looks tough at a particular level. At an elite level he gets torn to shreds. Diaz on the other hand is a bit of a throw back. Them two knuckle heads especially Nick are VERY tough.

Ironic? See talking to you is like conversing with a women with PMT. Only YOU would make the correlation between PRIDE FC and 'gay PRIDE' merely because they have a commonality of one word. **** you don't even know how to quote properly. Welcome to the ignore list.
