Does anyone have any advice as to how to strengthen your hands after a break which has then required surgery?

To cut a long story short, I've now broken my 5th metacarpal twice in the space of just over two years. The first break I had a K-wire inserted into my hand for 4-5 weeks which was then removed.... after a few months of rest, I went back to boxing and all was fine.

2 years on from this....... unfortunately re-breaking the same bone. Once again, I've had surgery and a K-wire fitted.

I'm hoping to have it removed shortly - but want to really make sure that I can do all that's necessary to strengthen it so that I can return to boxing and have no problems.

Does anyone have any tips or can help from experience? Even from different exercises to supplements/vitamins which will help with the recovery.

I've read up on a few bits and pieces... putting an elastic band on your fingers and then stretching them out, hand grips, squeeze ball, squeezing and twisting your hands in bags or rice etc.

You could use one of those power ball's that vibrate, they shake your bones with the vibrations which makes your bone mineral grow. The bone mineral will only grow a few percent but it will make your bones bigger and stronger witch the studies say that it could be the difference between your bones breaking or staying in tact. Apparently wladimir klitschko uses an oscillating pad that you stand on because it makes your bones stronger and helps your ribs to take body shots. I have broken my right hand countless times stupidly out of anger and didn't even realize it was broken till a year and a half later because I just thought oh it'll be fine. You can also make a fist and push your knuckles against a wall witch brings the bone mineral out to the front of the knuckle and strengthens them.

Hi Lads, I broke my 5th metacarpal 5 weeks ago and im getting my k wires and cast off tomorrow. I hope to be back shadow boxing /hitting pads in 2 to 3 weeks. Any suggestions on when to go back sparring and hitting hard? In 16oz gloves and well wrapped hands!! Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

If you are breaking that bone you aren't throwing your right hand correctly. If the punch is landing out there, you are swinging the punch, not driving it from the shoulder. Pay attention, when you hit the bags, mitts, etc...to where, on your hand, that punch is landing.
My hands are messed up because it took me a long time to learn that. The knuckle on the small finger of my right hand is now just below my elbow.

Take calcium/magnesium tables and try a very easy hand gripper, then work you way up in strength with them. The best in the world can be bout at IronMine.

Speak to a professional or maybe find a forum where they have a clue what they're talking about.

Boxing forums are terrible for injury advice.

I’ve broken bones in both my hands and it sucks. I’m sure you already know about stretching to get the mobility back after you get your cast or splints off, it took me 6 months to be able to open and close my right hand by itself the last time I broke it. My hands look like they’re the hands of an 80 year old, all crippled up. The best thing I can suggest for you is to train some open hand strikes and hammer fists from boxing guard to make sure you have some other tools if you ever have to defend yourself bare-knuckled again.
