Dan Rafael on his twitter account made a good point about that the show could go on if the telecast had a good undercard which it doesn't at all. It brings me back to when Joan Guzman completely pulled out of the Nate Campbell fight but the Showtime telecast was still able to go on by having the Tim Bradley vs Edner Cherry fight being moved up to main event status when the original main event Guzman/Campbell got cancelled. Hopefully promoters and networks could chalk this up for experience in the future in regards to undercard bouts, but most likely they won't.
I agree. It won't happen, though. They took a gamble and this time it didn't pay off. I doubt this situation fixes anything.
Yeah, this is a good point. I think there should be better undercards anyway but it's definitely something the TV companies should pay attention to. I don't really understand why promoters are so reluctant to put on better undercards. Fighters being more active is a bonus and padding their records is useful for selling future fights. The TV companies are appreciative because they have better cards. The fans are happy because they have a better top to bottom card. The fighters benefit because they're making more money. Every card should be stacked, I think. If a TV card is going to have 3 fights, each one should feature top talent.
They're reluctant cause they have to shell out more money for better undercards, but in a boxing crisis like the Broner/Escobedo one, they lose out on a whole lot more money all together. There's was/is plenty of bad things to say about Don King, especially back in the 90's but when Don King was running boxing in the 90s specifically, he would stack the undercards like no other promoter, whenever Chavez had a fight on Showtime, Don consistently had fighters like Tito Trinidad,Terry Norris,Jesse James Leija all in separate bouts......Don King undercards bouts like that were the norm.....
I haven't been this disappointed in a fight being cancelled since the Terry Norris Vs. M. Taylor fight. (Original date) Forgot why it was cancelled but it was scratched right before the broadcast. (If I remember correctly) ^I think Lamps even announced it right when the broadcast was supposed to start.
Yeah, that's right. The Don King model shows that it can work too. It's something Eddie Hearn is doing in Britain right now and I do think it's a viable business plan. Sure, they have to pay more for better undercards but they'll also get more money from the TV companies and they'll sell more tickets, so it works both ways. As long as those fighters don't ask for too much money, the promoters can do it.
You are completely off-base and totally missing the point. What should and NEEDS TO START happening is for HBO and GBP (and other networks and promotional outlets) to take a hard-line stance and place into the contract of these fighters that; Belts will be vacated, fight will be canceled and purse will be forfeited!!! These fighters (especially the young ones) need to know that there are and will be consequences to their undisciplined actions. You shouldn't be allowed the talk so much ****, proclaim yourself Mr. HBO, predict a KO and then can't ****ing make the weight. That is a severe lack of work ethic, class, dedication and a complete disrespect to the Sport. I can see if he was an aging fighter like Guzman, be he is ****ing 22 years old...C'mon man. I understand what you are saying Benny Blanco....But undercards are NOT the problem. Douchebags like Broner are the problem. Networks and Promotional outlets needs hold fighters to a higher standard and forfeit the entire purse of the fighter, trainer, cut-men...etc. Make the fighter know that he disappointed more than just his fans. Hit-em where it hurts...THE WALLET!!!!
If the fighters were disciplined and their handlers had any sort of sense, this would not happen. Forget the undercard. If they signed up for a 130 lbs fight, the fighter and his team should have been at 130 lbs max. Forget the fine. Fight should not happen.
My point is that sometimes a main event fight can't happen for a variety of reasons but to make sure the fans who bought tickets, and the TV networks who invested money into promotions can all be compensated a good undercard can sometimes save a lot of heartache/headaches if the telecast can still go on with a good undercard that fans can still enjoy at home and at the venue.
I get your point Benny, I do. But what you are suggesting in having "better undercards"...it doesn't even address the PROBLEM. Fighters just can't come in at any ****ing weight they want....they just can't do that. Someone can get seiously hurt by another fighter having an unfair advantage based on weight. And yes, I also get your point that "sometimes" Main-Event don't happen for a variety of reasons outside of the fighters control. But this was something that Broner and his team should have been able to control. They signed and agreed to 130lbs....CASE CLOSED!!! There needs to be SERIOUS consequences for these fighters who feel that if they just pay a fine, then "IT IS WHAT IT IS AND IT'S ALL GOOD"...BULL****!!! My opinion...Forfeit the entire purse, (giving half to the comission and half to the opponent), forfeit the belts and cancel the ****ing fight...PERIOD!!!) And I guarantee you that this **** will not happen again.
