That Broner fight has shades of Bautista/Ponce De Leon about about it

You dont put in your prospects against a killer like Ponce De leon, unless you know they are the real real deal

 

The Broner fight is certainly interesting but I am far from sure that it will be a good fight for either guy.

Broner is taking a huge step up in class not just a bit of a step up in class and we are talking a massive step up so this is a huge gamble for him.

Ponce de Leon is on a very good run of form and is now in a good position at 126 where he is close to a major fight, so to move up in weight (again) to take on a little known highly talented fighter is certainly a strange decision from his team as even if he wins he stands little to gain.

Unless it's a very close fight this will not be good for the loser. This is a huge risk by Golden Boy, Ideally Broner needs at least a couple more fights before taking on someone like Ponce de Leon.

 

Decent card, honestly.

 

GBP seem to want to test their investments. Ponce is a very good fighter and has been more thoughtful recently, but he can still be outboxed. If Broner's the real deal, he'll win. If not, well GBP can still build him cause there's no shame in losing to Ponce at this stage.

But it's risky in the short term for a young fighter.

 

I agree but what they are doing with Broner is more then a bit crazy. The kid has only faced journeymen and low level novice fighters so far. He hasn't anything resembling a fringe contender let alone a fierce former champion like Daniel Ponce de Leon, this is Degale-Smith x2 or maybe 3 let's put it like that. Like I said very risky move for both fighters, I personally wouldn't have made this fight but I have to say it will be interesting.

 

It's bizarre. Either staggering confidence based on sparring, or massive delusions about De Leon's limitations. But... who knows. I admire GBP for matching their guys tough, just wonder how well they've thought it through.

 

Exactly there is matching tough and then there is throwing a fighter into the deep end and Golden Boy do that a hell of a lot. Which whilst being fun to see quick progression in a fighters career more than not isn't always best for a fighters development.

 

Go and watch the lock fight!

Cornelius Lock is actually pretty good. Very, very inconsistent but he has some ability. The fight with Ponce was close but Lock was coming off a good win.

 

:good I've been impressed with Lock for a while (since at least the Gonzalez war).

He's actually a perfect B-level litmus test, from a promoter's standpoint. If your prospect/investment loses to him - the jig's up. If your guy wins - especially is it's in impressive fashion - you might have something pretty special.

 

Exactly, fair dig, quite fast, can put shots together, can move....all sporadically well mind. But he's experienced and comes to do a job, he is indeed, as the say, a perfect B-level litmus test.

Not the worst fighter to look **** against to be honest, and Ponce didn't look far off that (although he pulled it out towards the end of the ten IMO) and has looked more impressive since.

Ponce de Leon beat Lock comfortably enough IMO. He's one of the more improved fighters going around. Since he's moved up he's made a commitment to improving his all-round ability which was sensible as he recognized he might not be quite the same puncher. He's still a hitter but its incorporated into a much more methodical approach now and he's just as much of a threat of outworking you as knocking you out.

Broner better be good.
