Daniel Lartey vs. Ishmael Tetteh, 10 rounds @ middleweight

 

This is a crosstown battle of veterans that have been around the block, each with victories in exactly ⅔ of their career matches.

The absolutely hysterically nicknamed Ishmael "The Black Roy Jones" Tetteh (sick burn on that Floridian redbone) is 42 and Daniel "The Red Scorpion" Lartey a spry 31.

Several opponents in common:

• Francis Mensah - stopped thrice by Lartey and thrice by Tetteh.
• John Akurigo - beat Lartey by UD12 in 2018, stopped by Tetteh eight years earlier.
• Gabriel Adoku - stopped by Lartey in 2018, had a four bout rivalry with Tetteh from 2004 until 2015 with Adoku winning their first eight-rounder and losing the rematch on points, then getting stopped twice by Tetteh.
• Cudjoe Darah - stoppage loss to Lartey, stoppage and points losses against Tetteh.

Round 1

Tetteh is pressuring, staying directly in front of Lartey and hunkering down low. Body shots planted below Lartey's elbows and some light uppercuts and shoeshines working on breaking down his guard through accumulation. Lartey mostly circling and picking him off with jabs and straight rights at comfortable distance, or shelling up to absorb.

Round 2

Tetteh is mauling with a combination of wide body shots and high overhands. Lartey still trying a stick and move approach, staying tall behind the jab and stepping laterally. Tetteh goes downstairs and Lartey drops his elbows to protect his abdomen while hunching forward. Lartey just flicking out shuriken jabs at medium-low speed. Lartey parrying head shots well, making Tetteh follow him a lot - but getting hit on the body when they're close together. Tetteh with a looping right on the neck.

Round 3

Tetteh is being held at bay with Lartey's knuckle pads on his left glove pushing into his forehead, walking Lartey back with the arm left out fully extended. Lartey tries a counter uppercut on the backfoot. Tetteh slapping with quick light hooks up and down Lartey from hips to ears. Lartey backing up with both arms down and tossing pot shot 1-2s. For the second round in a row the camera goes dark for about ten seconds - is the schmuck operating it dropping the cap over the lens or something? Lots of jabs by Tetteh blocked as Lartey scoots away languidly. Couple of tiptoe hooks from Tetteh get past and graze.

Round 4

Tetteh is keeping his left foot in front of Lartey's, pressuring with volleys of light hooks & uppercuts on the frontfoot. Most getting blocked. Lartey painting his face with jabs while stepping away, then clinching the moment he gets in close. Ref splits them up and warns Tetteh for grinding his crown into Lartey's chest and Lartey for leaning down on him.

Round 5

Tetteh is now working behind a high jab, tossing it harder than he threw any of his power shots the last few rounds. Tetteh nearly walks Lartey into the corner but gets spun around with Lartey now teeing off at range with Tetteh's back against the ropes momentarily. Triple hook by Lartey. Good needle-threading straight combos by Lartey, darting in, getting his stuff off and pulling out before Tetteh can hit back. Lartey blocks some late flurries in the corner, then finishes the round pushing Tetteh into the opposite corner behind jabs and quick straight flurries.

Round 6

Tetteh is side-arming his jab into the chest and then rolling his right fist into the belt line of Lartey coming forward. Lartey able to block at either altitude with each bespoke wrist. Lartey opening up with flashy combos now taking quick steps to circumnavigate a stationary Tetteh. Wild right haymakers by Tetteh, trying to time Lartey as he orbits but never quite getting him. Big pinball launcher right hands by Tetteh, elbow up at shoulder height and glove drawn back to his chin before firing. Hard shots but telegraphed, Lartey able to avoid.

Round 7

Tetteh is now imitating Lartey somewhat, hands by his sides, hugging the ropes, flicking pot shot jabs off his thighs while keeping distance. It only last about half a minute before Tetteh is rumbling his way inside with underhanded wrecking ball attacks on Lartey's body. Tetteh held in a corner with a shoeshine stamping his guard into his face. Lartey playing patty-cake with Tetteh, keeping goalposts up but reaching out with a downturned palm to slap whichever hand Tetteh is shooting out down & away, Hungry Hungry Hippos style. Nice counter jab and looping right by Lartey while pivoting around Tetteh in the pocket.

Round 8

Camera dark for the first almost twenty seconds. Tetteh is cleaving in tight and gets clinched and stalled. Tetteh looking very arm weary, throwing each arm heavily and none of his shots remotely straight. He gives up on anything that requires aim, opting instead to just bash at Lartey's barn doors with hooks. That works for a bit until Lartey circles out to center ring, bending his knees, blocking & parrying, shuffling around tossing light counter jabs. His usual playbook, except now Tetteh is too gassed to get in as many touches as in early rounds. Ref calls for a stop to warn Tetteh for something - use of elbow inside, maybe? Lartey with a series of light face shots at the bell.
