A few things popping up on the Forum about Kell Brook's performance, so thought I'd share some truth and some opinion. Before this fight I said it was a step up for both men. I think the fight showed this. It answered a lot of questions about both men, they each have bright futures. Carson Jones is a quality fighter. I must admit, I had my doubts, but not as of now. At 25, he still has plenty of time to make his mark. A lot of questions are being and will be asked of Brook, but don't disrespect Carson, the guy has a chin, heart, strength, stamina and that will take you a fair way in this sport. Kell Brook is poor on the inside. This is nothing new, if you had watched him before anyhow. He prefers to tie up or lean away. This is the style he has been taught at the Ingle's gym. Its unlikely to ever change. It will be an issue against solid pressure fighters, but the way he boxed for the majority of tonight's fight gives me confidence it won't have an overbearing impact on his career. Kell Brook has heart. People who hadn't seen the Ndou fight or the nature surrounding his win over Kevin McIntyre were probably questioning this. Now they have no right to. He seriously hurt (broke?) his nose midway and carried on regardless. Once again, people seem to be forgetting that styles make fights. Jones is a solid pressure fighter. Forgetting the star names for a second, I don't think I've seen someone that relentlessly forward thinking at the top of the current 147 lb class. Perhaps if Peterson were to step up? Either way, Brook won't have that type of trouble with other boxers, such as Alexander, Bradley, Malignaggi. He is still an excellent boxer, perhaps a question mark around his stamina though. Any thoughts, feedback opinion? No Brittards please. In fact if you have ever even used that word, get the hell out the thread!
Brooks lucky that Jones is **** at punchin, if he got that tired against anyone else he would be dead and they had the cheek to mention Berto and Ortiz's name before, Alexander will destroy him
The pressure was relentless from Jones, this was a big learning experience for Kell. The most frustrating aspect was the way he just seemed to stop boxing after the 6th round, Jones roughed him up good and it seemed to stop him. I think against non pressure fighters at the top level Kell will perform much better, Jones game plan was pretty spot on.
I think Ortiz could give Kell some trouble. Not sure about Berto, he's more a boxer puncher without the grace that Brook has. Alexander? Well, again, he's a boxer, southpaw so that presents something different. I think Kell has greater footwork, upper body movement and I would even argue punch power... Again though, styles make fights sir. Carson Jones seems to be an interesting pressure fighter, don't buy the media hype or the 8 losses, Jones is quality - hence, he gave Kell some trouble.
I'm sorry, but I think the negatives far outweigh the positives tonight.I had no reason to doubt Kell's heart before tonight,so I didn't need to see him make it by a pubic hair. I knew Carson had the potential to be a real party pooper, but this should have been the night Kell laid down a marker.I'd have much rather seen a performance that would make HBO or Showtime execs take notice. And Eddie clearly isn't happy about Kell's attitude.Do you think he would even dream of another eliminator if he was happy with Kell? You're right about styles, but Carson came forward with all the lateral movement of a ruler. That's two plodders who have asked questions (albeit vastly different ones) of Kell and the answers haven't been exactly definitive. There's "trouble it t'mill" in the Kell camp. All this "proved he had heart" stuff isn't what he needs at this stage with the promotion he's had.
Agree with your post. Like I say, perhaps a question mark around Brook's conditioning. Certainly his promoter and Kell himself mentioned diet and what have you. That's my one worry, because at this stage of your career, at this level of fight, attitude outside the ring should be locked down. Also agree your second point re: styles. Not a lot of fighters in the current 147 lb class would have brought pressure like that.
As I say, I stopped worrying about Brook's heart after the Ndou fight. Also, this was a step up for both. Jones was there to lay down his marker just as Kell was. Brook boxed beautifully for the first half of the fight, though his conditioning seemed to let him down, coupled with a bloody/broken nose.
Agreed. "Oh, but Kell showed lots of courage" don't mean ****, especially since his courage has never been in question. The way his energy zapped and struggled with a B-level come-forward plodder that didn't really throw that much, was disappointing. But I agree with the OP in that he'll have an easier time against the likes of Alexander, Malignaggi, etc.
He broke his nose pretty badly from what is being said on twitter, so I think he did well enough to stick in it, still won and I still think he'll be a world champion
It seems like Brook has no inside game. He pulls his opponents head down when they come close. He also seems to gas out and when he gets hit his facial expressions show that he doesn't want to be in the ring. If Carson can do this to him what are other's gonna do. I wouldn't rate Carson as a world class fighter though. I think the ref helped Kell abit.. i dunno what he was saying to Carson?
I like Brook, but Alexander would beat the **** out of him...Alexander's chin has been proven to be solid, he's been in with FAR better opposition, he's been in DEEP water and come out better for it...Alexander would be too much: too much speed, fundamentally he's pretty solid, and when he sits down on punches like he did with Maidana has plenty of pop. I don't see the advantage that Brook would have in this fight.
