Anyone know what the grudge was between these two before they met in April 78 for the NABF LWW title?

    Cheers

Not even sure if I'm thinking of the same guy but wasn't he outstanding as an amateur ? I am only 25 and don't know a thing about Curry apart from that. If thats the same guy even ?

He was pretty handy. 315-11 as an amateur. Runner-up to Sugar Ray Leonard at the 76' Olympic Boxing trials.

I'd urge everyone who hasn't already seen this fight to take the time to watch it. As Ant says, a forgotten classic.

Curry (Dons brother) did make it as a belt holder but didn't hold the title long.

Yeah he only held it for six months but defended it twice during that time. If that was now for some guys the two defences would be 18 months!!

It was over - what else? - a woman. Curry was one of my favourite fighters. He lacked his brother Don's ability but won a world title on pure guts and a big left hook. He nearly stopped Wilfred Benitez three times and badly gashed Tommy Hearns. He loved boxing so much he tried to kill his trainer Jesse Reid when Reid told him to retire. Sadly, Bruce is now in a very bad way.
Bruce has a place in boxing history in that the 10-point 'must' scoring system is often attributed to his controversial fight with Benitez in 1977 at MSG, a fight that took place under the old 'rounds' scoring system. Curry floored Benitez three times (he sent Wilfred sprawling through the ropes in one of the knockdowns) but could only be given the 'round' as a reward for his big punching. Benitez, however, was given more 'rounds' by merely edging them, when he was basically running for his life, so the decision went to Benitez. The NYSAC realised they needed a scoring system where knockdowns were given more recognition on the scorecards because, let's face it, most knockdowns are worthy of it.
