Gentle Giant personality, fights like the ones against Lennox Lewis & Joe Bugner, and the fact that he finally one a version of the World Title at his 3rd/4th time of asking.

Great personality and the Brits love an underdog which he generally was in title fights.

I remember being totally gutted when Lewis beat him in Cardiff because I loved Frank and Lennox is an arrogant ****.

I ws rooting for Lewis, as a Brit boxing fan he seemed to be the one that could go on and achieve more in the sport. If Bruno had of won he'd have got flattened within his first couple of defences.

    Claypole seems to love Bruno

Maybe he should post why Frank had so many bum boys who loved him

I think part of it was that even though he was clearly not the best out there, he was always in there with a punches chance no matter who it was. The guy could genuinely bang and I think the public like that.

He also, as an underdog, took on the very best... as mentioned previously in the thread the British public like a good underdog (or used to anyway).

Full of great traditional British values. Hardworking, ordinary bloke not at all cocky. Only ever seemed to want two things in life a happy family and the world title (goals most of us share, ok not the world title bit to be successful profesionally.)

Shear determination to defy the odds. A refusal to give in. Plus he was a heavyweight who could bang.

Everytime I rewatch Tyson v Bruno it's like it's live and without fail everytime when I see the moment he rocks Mike I jump up and scream get on him frank don't let up.

Classic Carpenter commentary (which he regretted later I think) 'and he's hurt Tyson.....Get in their Frank'.

Agree with the comments above about the underdog and humble thing.

Don't forget that the vast majority if his fights were on terrestrial TV too - mostly on Sportsnight if I remember right so he had a very high profile in the population, regularly on TV for other promos etc.

He didn't have fights against other British fighters where people would have to choose sides until Lewis I guess so it was always him against some yank or 'mexican roadsweeper' unlike Benn/Watson/Eubank etc.

I can't help but think there was something that people liked about his vulnerability - I'm not sure that Joe Public likes boxers to sound too intelligent to be honest - probably blame Stallone for that too but I might be way off.

Because we'd rather have a nice loser than a good winner.

Because he was on the the HP sauce advert, and you couldn't get more British than that if you bottled the queen's fanny juice and put the Kray twins picture on the label

One of the hardest training fighters - always gave his best, even if he wasn't the most talented and he had an affable and comical personality. Had some decent wins and lots of KOs and if he fought how he did against Lewis against Wladimir, he'd have a better chance then the Americans who all come in sloppy and out-of-shape. Most of today's heavyweights could learn a thing or two about dedication, training and perseverence from Bruno and the division would be better for it.
