Bruno! Bruno! Bruno! - Why was Frank so well loved?

He was just a genuinely nice bloke.

 

frank always gae it 100% he had limited abilty but made the most of it training hard and gave the impression he was working class lad , the fight with mccall was one of the best atmospheres i have ever seeen at fight we all wanted that title for him and in a strange way you felt like you knew him.

 

One of the nicest Person Ive Met in Boxing, and a Grafter. Been to camp with Him many times, and through the years He never changed always polite and caring. Some great tales of His generousty. Great Bloke.

 

He was the definitive housewives favourite. Everyone wanted him to win the World title, eventually he did and it meant a hell of a lot to him.
Before he won the world title he was a household name. "Frank Bruno's boxing computer games", HP sauce and Pantomime etc.
He could take a good shot, had big power and a good jab. He just lacked that certain something. Knowing how to survive was one example.
I remember reading a comment about Frank having the body of a Greek statue, but with fewer moves! That pretty much summed it up!

 

Big Frank's main problem was his physique He had bunched muscles that build up lactic acid quicker than the long muscle type of say Lewis & the longer a fight went the more vulnerable he became but what a nice guy the whole nation was up for him when he finally won the title he could have held a title for longer but had the guts to go for the big bucks againgst the Badest man on the planet much "respect" Frank

 

I remember that Tv programme, where people get to invite famous celebrity hero's to live with them...for a weekend.

Frank Bruno was proper pissed off on that programme and upset afew people, it was because of his illness though.

The happiest i had ever been after a boxing match was the Bruno v McCall fight.... I was litreally jumping up and down and taking every punch with frank and urging him on.... the last minute seemed to last hours

 

What's that supposed to mean?

Frank Bruno was one of the most successful British heavyweights we've ever had and is a genuine, humble, nice bloke.

What's not to like about him?

 

- Very well promoted in a publicity sense.

- Always exciting: it was always a question of who was going to get knocked out first when Bruno was in the ring. In his entire career, he had just TWO bouts that went the distance!

- Brilliant personality. Being arrogant and flamboyant is a way to get attention in the UK, but it's the Hatton/Benn/Bruno-types that get the adulation and long-term love. Sorry, Eubank/Hamed/Lewis etc. fans, but that's just the way it is.

- Combined being articulate with speaking in terms that even the dumbest and most inebriated football hooligan could understand.

- No noticeable public personality faults; his psychological, substance and domestic problems didn't surface until after he retired.

- Tim Henman syndrome: there's something about the Brits that make them love the likes of Henman and Bruno more than the likes of Buchanan, who couldn't even get a big crowd here in Edinburgh. I love that the UK always gets behind the brave losers (loyalty is a great virtue that many foreign boxing fans lack), but we should get behind the brave winners as well.
