In 2003 Frank Bruno went on record saying ' Audley is ripe like an orange for picking and he coudl of beat him no problem' , Frank was derided for his comment and later in the same year Big Frank was sectioned. Yet it was probably the most sane comment by Frank. Back then virtually everyone thought Audley would beat a peak Bruno but is there anyone out there that now believe that Audley could of beat Big Frank????:think
frank was a funny fighter having some of his best performances when he lost, ie lewis and tyson1 , but imo 85 percent of the time Bruno would win!!
Yeh the Lewis performance was very good, too many people tried to excuse Lennox's performance including Lewis himself saying he was cold. I was at Cardiff that night we were all freezing !! Frank fought a great fight that night , shown increased flexibility and speed with the addition of Keith Morton to the team and Lewis shown himself to be a true champ by coming back.
I think Lewis was surprised by the fact that Frank really took the fight to him - and tried (successfully) to outbox, rather than simply go for the big one early. It was his best career performance, by miles - if he fought like that against McCall I wouldn't have ruled out a stoppage. He would have way too much for Harrison - it has taken years for people to realise how good Lewis was, and I guess it has for Bruno also.... the fight would be over from the first jab Bruno landed - simply a matter of time. To beat Bruno you had to have a solid set of skills, plus power. Harrison is sloppy, lazy and lacks balls. Easy play to call!
At the time Audleys hype and career were at something of a high and I thought Bruno was being a little silly. Looking back I wonder if he might have "seen something" that the rest of us hadnt yet.
A lot (Bunce I believe pointed this out, as he saw Audley in the World Championship, the year before the Olympics) who have seen Audley as an amateur could tell you how his career would go. His pro career mirrored his amateur in that he had a lot of potential and was a great self publicize, but used all his energy pre fight and rarely delivered. Harrison was shockingly ordinary most of the time pre Olympics, kudos to him for putting a run together to win one of the weakest divisions in the modern games; but the moment he had to point out he had a rematch clause in the Middleton fight, just in case*, you knew his talk hid a lot of self doubt. *A rematch clause is sensible in his position and should of been in there, but for goodness sake, an Olympic Gold Medalist does not need to mention it in pre fight hype for a pro debut against a 10 and 10 bum!
Have you red Frank Bruno's book..? He was very ill at that point in his life, had lost weight..and was hooked on drugs.
yes i have, i was a big supporter of Franks. I don't mean the silly talk of Frank making a comeback when he was ill , it was just the general comment that he could of beat him, as Janitor says he must of seen something , many people got caught up in the Audley hype, whilst with Frank many people ran him down, he did have his limitations but he was determined , shame he wasn't fighting in this era, would of wiped the floor with most of the current crop.
I remember after one of Audley's fight, Frank got in the ring to hype up the showdown with A-Force Harrison. Audley played down the rumours in his post fight interview but I reckon a mentally unstable Bruno would have still knocked him out.
I never knew he had a rematch clause for that fight Then again with the bull**** stoppage rule for headclashes it might be wise :nut
Audley is the kinda' fighter Bruno would've blitzed. Audley doesn't even have the superior jab here. Bruno K.O 2.
