I cannot see past The Bomber. Mason was brave and rugged, but Bruno showed an ability to win at a level Mason did not. Gary fights at a pace that Bruno would be comfortable with, so stamina would not really be an issue. Frank by 10/12 round decision or maybe a late stoppage due to facial damage.

Bruno would get a lot of success with his jab. And also he'd enjoy the pace of this fight.

Bruno was better and wins 8/10 fights.

I think Bruno is better but could fold down the stretch against inferior opponents. Mason may beat Bruno late or Bruno could stop his man or win a UD.

Agree w/ consensus so far. But Frank will have to dig deep to win this. And that's when the parachute opens. and he freezes when hit. What a bad habit. No time outs in boxing and it looks like here's a guy that really needs one. I don't know if I can think of another heavy that freezes like Frank when tagged. Man, once he's stunned when fatuged, it's over. I think if he went down instead it probably wouldn't matter much because he'd get up with no legs and probably look like a newborn giraffe.

But I also think think Mason absorbs far better of the 2 and he'd likely have to the first half of the fight. If one of them gets busted up or swollen or something, I think that guy loses.

To be more confident of the Mason upset, I would have really liked a better corner. It would have been a big big fight had it happened and how many times during that era did we see some terrific fights where the fans went nuts? They would have for this and it was a bout I wanted to see.

I thought Frank was the type to get ambushed by a young up and comer. Much like he did to Coetzee, I think youth would have destroyed old Bruno. Old Bruno vs. up and coming Sanders or Brewster or Ruddock or insert name here guy.

Mason was actually the better boxer, and probably more durable.
But he was even slower than Bruno, and Bruno had the better jab.

    Yep

but like lots of those heavies through the years, they do have their warts. And that's what causes them to get exploited and lose, those darn shortcomings and flaws.

I do think one of them gets busted or swollen kind of early. Probably because it'd be lots of hooks and hard shots thrown and no measure the guy type jabs. Crowd noise forces them to trade. And because he started fast and liked to set the tone better, I think it's Bruno that busts up Mason. And I just can't picture either being able to overcome that big of an obsticle against the other. A busted up Gary Mason is in big big trouble. Then again, a busted up Bruno is in some real deep waters himself.

But it sure would have sold out well. But even the winner of the bout would enjoy it briefly and likely be getting licked themselves within 2 bouts Even if it had put the spotlight on them and gotten some bigger fights. They just aren't going on a 3-0 run facing 3 real good fighters.

Next in that UK heavyweight scene could have been Herbie Hide--and another ko result.
