Did McCall sleep walk through this? Or does Bruno deserve more credit. I thought Bruno utilised his jab very well, but he was totally gassed in the last couple of rounds and there for the taking.
McCall simply couldn`t cope with Bruno`s longer jab, he had no head movement, Bruno gassed by the end but clinched his way to victory in the last round, McCall was overrrated because he caught a sloppy Lewis with a good shot, he had really bad fundamentals.
If I recall correctly, McCall cried during his ring walk and fought fairly passively, at least to begin with. I suspect he wasn't in the best place mentally (though you only had to look at him to see he was in good shape physically) and may not have fully committed to the optimum strategic approach for fighting Bruno. That said, I don't think he completely broke down ala his fight with Lewis, he certainly tried to put it on Bruno in the final round. He couldn't outbox Bruno and there was no easy way for McCall to get by his jab. My guess is McCall either didn't have the tools to consistently close the distance or just wasn't in a mentally enough stable & focused place, to figure out how to do so. Either way, I don't agree that he "sleep walked his way through the fight", at least, not as in he could have won but decided not to try.
I'll say one thing though, if the fight had been scheduled for the good old 15Rounds, then Mccall stops him. Frank was absolutely knackered at the end.
McCall was actually not a great boxer, He caught Lewis and barely edged a 46 year old Larry Holmes. Bruno was not a great boxer either but a little better than McCall Frank being the Great Hope of Great Brittain meant he got tons of chances and was finally able to capitalize when he faced a mediocre Champion
