Let’s say this fight happened back in the day - Bruno from the Lewis fight vs Rahman from Lewis 1. Who are you picking?
Rahman should be favored. Much better work at teh top end, not so dependent on competitive losses, to prop up his resume.
I know why he was loved in the UK while he was active. He was very likeable, personable, and fan friendly, and the British media just lapped him up. Some said that he played the amiable fool, but I think that was just his natural vibe. His media profile was similar to Anthony Joshua's, even if his results weren't.
It's interesting isn't it? I would have said similar of Joshua a few years ago but he lost me when he grabbed the microphone after the first Usyk fight. AJ is ok but a bit of a whackjob and I suspect most of his persona is manufactured in this era of media training. I think with Frank, he is who he is as you say above. I don't think there is anything phony about him at all.
I quite fancy the Bruno from the Lewis fight. It would be a great scrap for sure And as for adulation and popularity. Bruno was more popular than AJ I think. This content is protected And this ^ was way before social media and YouTube.
I’m not from the UK but everything I hear about him makes me think he was more popular than Joshua today. I’m guessing that just like the USA, boxing was also more popular in the 80s and 90s than now. And Bruno was extremely popular. The Bruno-McCall fight had one of the best atmospheres I’ve seen. UK fight crowds are more electric.
Generally when Bruno faced someone chinny, he fought aggressively and often got the knockout. It isnt like Rahman was a master boxer, with incredible stamina to outlast Frank. Rahman was knocked out not once, but, twice by Maskaev. Bruno would have flattened Maskaev in short order. Rahman's win over an overconfident, out of shape Lewis was basically a fluke. Lewis DESTROYED Rahman in the rematch. At least Bruno only lost to elite fighters in competitive fights.
I don't think you can really argue that it isn't more important to be savvy in front of the media these days. Everything is recorded and there's big endorsement dollars on the table. Yes, we all have a persona that we'd like to portray but it is more easily monetised (or not if you get it wrong) than it has ever been. Also, professional sportspeople more often than not have some media coaching along the way.
