You have embraced this , sloppily researched ,hash of a book because it suits your hate agenda regarding Jack Johnson.
Very well , here are some more extracts from it.
HUgh D McIntosh had never refereed a fight before the Burns/Johnson title bout`Page 205.
McIntosh refereed the Burns /Lang fight for Burns title in Melbourne, less than 3 months before the Burns Johnson fight a fight incidentally, in which Burns weighed 174lbs only 5 .5lbs more than he did for the Johnson match.
McIntosh was a former fighter himself, and fully cognisant with the rules of the game .

Jim Jeffries warned Burns not to fight either Sam Langford or Jack Johnson, he openly admitted he had avoided them because he did not want a black man to become heavyweight champion.Page147.

While I have no doubt Jeffries avoided Johnson in his last 2 years as champ, when Jeffries retired in 1905, Langford weighed 150lbs.

Jack Johnson's first fight was against Klondike Haynes in 1897 it was a 7 round draw. Page 150.
I have Johnson fighting twice in 1895 several times in 1896 and , a total of 10 fights before he ever met Klondike which was in 1899 by the way, not 1897, and resulted in a tko loss for Johnson ,,in 5 rds.

Jim Jeffries stated I've got no use for any living n****r . Page 4
    Care to comment ?
Regarding the Burns /O Brien first fight, the book states Burns broke O Brien's nose and closed his eye, winning the 20 rds easily.
There seems little doubt Jim Jeffries the referee was biased in favour of his buddy O Brien .Page 131.

Bob Edgren, reporting for the New York World stated, "Jeffries is a lobster of a referee for not handing Burns the decision"
    Comments?

These are just a few easily spotted mistakes that I found in a ten minutes trawl through this mish mash of fairytales.

Mr McCaffery states he first heard about Burns in 1974 although he says he was then making his living as a sports writer and ,is himself a Canadian , he was not only unaware that Johnson took the title off of Burns he did not know of Burns existence.:huh

I submit he hasn't got much further along the road at the present

Would you say going 10 rounds with a broken arm constitutes intestinal fortitude?
How about going 26 rds at 37 against a giant, and being in front after 20rds, does that qualify?
Going 15rds to win a decision over a 6'3.5 ,225lbs fringe contender at the age of 52, after having been out of the ring for 2 years, does that qualify?

How does this compare with 28years old Vitali Klitschko retiring ,whilst being in front against the powder puff hitting Chris Byrd.

A fight which he was winning comfortably ,and only had to waltz through another 9 minutes of action .
A fight in which he was 34lbs heavier ,and 8 inches taller ,than his opponent ?
    Thoughts please?

The NY Times indicates the injury happened late in the match. Johnson quit more than Vitali did. Funny you use size. Johnson was often the bigger man, yet he was floored by a much smalelr Ketchel and looked like a poor boxer vs. a much smaller O'Brien. Now, I must get ready to leave for work. Have fun trying to tell the board how this Burns book is a pack of lies.

    Cut the crap.

You had time to post this excuse.
Are you going to respond to the innacuracies I found in this book or not?
You posted excerpts, I posted excerpts that show up glaring mistakes caused by sloppy/lazy research,[ I found the mistakes inside ten minutes]

.Now address the question, and while you are at it ,respond to my thread ,regarding the Ryan /Jeffries footage, that has your name emblazoned on the title, so that you cannot fail to see it.

The N Y Times did not have a reporter present at the fight, first hand reporters indicated that the injury happened in the 2nd round.NEXT!

    I don't understand?

You're saying early in his career he displayed questional heart. All that does is further increase the legend of defeating a world champion whilst having a broken rib.

Like how vitali received shed loads of credit for the heart he displayed against lewis, ortiz received shedloads for the heart he displayed against berto etc.

If a fighter had previously shown weak mentality then it makes any display of fortitude that more impressive.

To summarise, based on your conclusions we have the following scenario: johnson was a skilled fighter who lacked heart but when he finally got his championship shot he overcame a broken rib to dominate the champion.

Seriously you're improving the way I see johnson all the time and perhaps I need to reevaluate him now.

    McGrain,

This thread almost beats Mendoza's claims of Joe Louis doing a back flip when hit by a Buddy Bear left hook
