Dempsey was known to take sparring very seriously, even against writers and other non-combatants. Roger Kahn (he wrote "A Flame Of Pure Fire," a Dempsey biography) tells a story of talking boxing with Dempsey in 1960. They were in Dempsey's restaurant and talking about Patterson/Johannsson when Dempsey suggested they take their jackets off, get up and move around a bit. He said dempsey suddenly got very cold-eyed, fired a jab that creased his jaw, hit him in the body with a right and whipped a hook by his chin. Then bought him a drink and told him that, in the ring, you always keep your guard up.
Almost Dempsey was asking how he would fight Johansson and stay away from Ingos right and Dempsey said let me show you my one two and threw a jab and then a right under the heart, then he threw a left by his jaw and he said why did you throw a third punch and Dempsey said keep your guard up at all time always liked that story
Theres also him with Jim Corbett in there as well and i dont know why but it says 1920 but these are clips from young and older Dempsey the sparring at the end is older Dempsey after the layoff
Dempsey's power is laughably overrated. Dempsey wore, what, 5 ounce gloves for most of his fights? That's little more than a piece of tape and leather around your fist. These old time nutbags on here keep comparing him to guys who wore much larger gloves as if it didn't matter.
I've seen Tunney with Corbett but not Dempsey with him. I love Jack Dempsey. He was and always shall remain my first love in boxing. That's a small middleweight he's bouncing around the ring there. I forget dude's name but someone on here identified him years ago.
I didnt know 27 made me an old time nutbag  i guess im in my final years... If those small gloves were the reason for his knockouts and punching power then why wasnt every 180-190 pounder from that era a Dempsey like puncher that was knocking everybody out
Sir, I am one of your oldtime"nutbags " as you describe people like myself who know aeons more than you and should be shown some respect as YOU TOO will get older...You sir, know zilch about boxing, but spout insults to a group of posters who have done you no harm...So brave of you to insult a group of people from afar...So BRAVE !
