Boxing's appeal i think has more to do with the appearance of "invincibility" the fighters project.

People like to idealize themselves as full of endless potential. The same could be said of others sports, but boxing exemplifies this probably the most, because fighters experience assault and overcome it, somehow.

And here's comes the dark side of boxing, because the medias very seldom show the after effects of being repeatedly bludgeoned to the head.

That would shatter the myth of "invincibility" instantly, so they keep perpetuating the illusion of "endless potential", and people happily oblige, content with this entertaining compromise.

This is hard to watch. Heartbreaking seeing the effects of fighters getting their brains repeatedly pounded on.

That's exactly why their appeal dissipates with a lot fans the moment they lose, the perception a fan has that their romanticized hero is human they become lesser than in their eyes which I find very immature. Coupled with idea that someone is somehow less of a man if they get caught with the right punch and knocked out, they're human not robots, it happens, because no one is invincible, as much as some wish to believe that to be the case.

I can't say for sure, I think it is to some extent for certain, however, pure violence is not the main appeal to me of this sport, there are more violent combat sports out there which I don't really enjoy as much.

I think it depends on the person, but in my case, the appeal of boxing stems from the fact that the violence is refined to such a fine point that I, and perhaps a few others, experience it more keenly than the might if manifested in a less refined manner.

Put another way...A pier six brawl can be fun to watch, but a fast-paced contest between two technically sound boxers can draw the breath from my lungs.

I watch it for the sporting element, the intense competition, to see who is the best boxer. It's the same reason I watch other sports, some them car-based.

I don't really watch it for the violence. If it was about violence, I'd watch world star or other bare-knuckle fights on youtube, however for the most part these sicken me.
