Jab and uppercut from outside by Vazquez. Benavides isn't even bothering to lift his arms past his own waist, just flipping them into Vazquez's trunks in some rough sketch of body shots or trying to slip them around to get a grasp on a bundle of said trunks to pull Vazquez in close. Vazquez uses some reflex-based defense to let Benavides' wide shots miss glaringly, and counters with some hooks while getting backed to the ropes. Vazquez holds up his left shoulder and turns halfway to his right, catching Benavides and leaning into him to stall until the bell.

Round 12

Vazquez takes some wild swings on the arms and slides back a step to stick his tongue out and showboat. Now Vazquez opens up and rocks Benavides to the ropes with short turned-over hooks behind the ear. Benavides is just slapping out with arm punches now, still pressuring. Right jab and then a very sloppy left while diving in to grab. Vazquez drops his hands and mugs, and gets tickled with a stray left hand. Vazquez lands a 1-2 and backs up. Left hook to the body by Vazquez, and he breaks into a full trot around Benavides. Clinch. Vazquez jabs and backs up. Benavides takes a big step right in, widening his base and drubbing the hips of Vazquez with both hands. Benavides DOWN in the final seconds! knockdown!! OUT? No! Benavides complained about hurting his ankle. ??

They resume, for three seconds. Bell!

There's just something very familiar about a short and kind of stumpy but still kind of athletic guy, with a good jab and good defense, unnecessarily treating the second half of a championship bout like he's in there with the monster from under his bed (a'la DLH against Trinidad...except they're not in with anyone like Tito...).

Considering how little hope he clearly had of winning even early on, Benavides' never-say-die attitude was definitely respetcable.

El Tiquito did perform well here, but I really can't see him pulling the same stunts off against a more complete warrior in Solis.

Of course, Solis may become irrelevant to the discussion by the time 2012 rolls around if Uchiyama downs him like a flute of champagne on New Year's Eve.

 

Boxrec must have heard wrong.

There were a couple "nueves" in there, but at least one "diece siete".

It's a big card, so probably closer to 2 or 3pm for the main event?
