The way I see it if Pacquiao wants the title the so bad the fight should be at 147. Its not like gaining 2 more lbs will kill him...

 

hes fighting for the diamond belt, first in history, thats a oppurinty of a life time, just for putting up his belt at a catch weight. one that was given to him, of course he took it.

 

exactly dude.. i posted a link earlier of fights that were fought at a catcweight. B-hop vs Delahoya at 158 instead of 160 and all of hopkins belt was on the line.

It's not a case of being 'allowed' to, or Team Pacquiao would of made it at '47 in the first place and not a catchweight. It's affectively still a fight at 145lbs, and if Cotto weighs in at the welterweight limit or north of '45, obviously there are going to be penalties. Which is why he won't do it.

 

Exactly. Floyd was contracted to fight Marquez at 144 and still came in at 146. If Cotto decides to come in at 146 or 147 it just means he has to pony up a few hundred grand.

 

Exactly! It's on the line b/c the WBO wanted it that way and that is how it should be. A fight of this magnitude should be worth more than just a "W" or "L" on either man's record.

Cotto didn't have to accept....he saw a great opportunity and challenge and jumped at it. Originally the fight WAS going to be for a title but Cotto quickly took that away to get some leverage at the negotiation table. If you don't recall the fight was suppose to be for the title but when Cotto caught wind of the vast disparity in the purse he pulled out the wild card.

Your right......just b/c it's a champion fighting doens't mean it's a world title fight....but with everyting in perspective...this is a very important fight with a lot of substance....fights like these are ALWAYS world title fights if one or both are holding titles. And both men are. Its a WBO World title WW fight for good and obvisous reasons.

 

lol....why is it Bull **** brah? There is nothing wrong with evening the playing feild. THey do **** like that with guys within their own division with size of rings, brands of gloves and venues. THis is just a different kind of situation where it's a smaller man vs a bigger one and they meet somewhere in the middle or make arrangemnts to face one anther on EVEN terms.

 

If the agreement was that the weight was 145....then the weight was 145. If they agreed to fight in MSG or in LV...it's an agreement or the kinds of gloves they wear....it's all agreements that both camps agree too so if they agree that the fight is for the title....whats the big deal? It's not like they are fighting at 140 for the 147 lb title.

 

Listen, I am not here to cry about why they are fighting for the title.... my point is that the WBO did something that they shouldn't have done, which is to rank a boxer overnight just to justify their actions....

It is sad that many so called fans agree with the ABC organizations when it comes to actions that favourr their favourite fighters......

And no, the fight wasn't for the title in the beginin.... even Roach and Pac didn't care about it....

btw, I don't give a **** what kind of magnitud the fight is.... things should be done accordingly.....

 

HOnestly ever since the establishment of world titles....before the ABC's came round they have always minipulated the rankings for fighters whom moved up in weight or for big wins in any weight class. Justly or not. I could care less about the belts, but in terms of this fight.....it's huge and a history making fight should PAC win and moving up once again to face a HUGE challenge in Miguel.

Ranking a fighter overnight is something that has been in practice from the governing bodies since the dawn of the idea of "Ranking" fighters.

And YES! It was to begin with a Title fight. Cotto decided to hold his title as ransom to get more leverage at the negotiation table. Smart business move b/c he got more money. PAC didn't care aobut the title but Roach did. He wanted history for his fighere which was the ONLY reason he decided to take ths kind of risk with PAC.

And yes.....things should be done accordingly which is why this is a title fight. Nothing is new here....just like nothing is new regarding catch weights. By the way...LOVE Cotto. One of my favs along with PAC but I see this fight as a very meaningful fight in which its a true championship match up between two of the very best in the sport. I just see pac winning.

 

personally I don't like the belt being in the line at a catchweight. But Cotto can come over 145 if he really wanted to (bbut I doubt he would) and he agreed to the terms so whatever, I just want to see a good fight!
