I've always thought his reputation as the lesser Baer brother is unfair. Although its true he was inferior to Max, he doesn't deserve do have his place in history placed in his brother's shadow.

As you said, he beat Galento. He also stopped Abe Simon and Lee Savold. He also knocked out a lesser known but solid fighter named Al Delaney, who would later beat Galento and drew with Loughran.

And, unlike Max, Buddy fought his ass off trying to beat Louis, at least in the first fight.

A solid contender with dynamite in his fists. He had the misfortune to come along when Joe Louis was at the absolute pinnacle of his game. He is one of the contenders who might have held the title if Louis had chosen a different hobby.

Buddy was known as one of Hollywood's gentle giants. But in his time, he was reputed to be one of the greatest punchers ever. If he had had more boxing technique he may well have been champ.
