Anyways, I heard he gave Joe Louis all he could handle and dropped him in fight #1 , one of the most mysterious bouts in the history of the sport....
Here, you can watch the fight for yourself. Despite the early hiccup Louis was nonetheless impressive. His technique and power are really something to behold. A truly aesthetically pleasing fighter to watch. He wasn't as small as some would have it either. Perhaps his fighting a number of giants in his day gave a false read on his true size. For those who are interested, here's the fight in higher quality, though it's missing the audio: This content is protected
Good post. Classic fight in black and white combined with chill beats! You might be onto a new sleep therapy.
Nice! I did see that version but wasn’t sure if people preferred it with commentary. Smooth Legends is always a go to for best quality.
The lack of commentary is sorely felt. On that note, I haven't found the original broadcast of the fight. All the videos have the English guy who did the voiceovers but I don't think he compares to the original broadcasts most of the time.
Joe Louis could have been terrible on pay per view. Imagine you watch the entire fight card, with perhaps one fight on teh undercard being relevant to the future of a division. The Louis just stops his challenger in the first round, and you had beers in the fridge to cover a 15 round fight!
Thanks for the video! Seeing it now, the only controversy should have been whether Joe or Buddy should have been disqualified. Joe might have landed the punch after the bell but Im not sure. Buddy's managers entered the ring, either before the bell or after it, Im not sure either! When in doubt...side with the champion? lol Or maybe a no-contest? I see Baer was a very good boxer who might have even been champion in an era such as the Marvin Hart era, the Primo Carnera era or the mid 80s era. Louis on the other hand, got up and utterly dominated the fight after the first round. He was on his way to annihilating Buddy.
No prob at all. Not sure which version you watched but @Pedro_El_Chef linked a much better quality video than I did. We are very lucky to have such crisp, clear film of the the great Bomber. Louis was a very clean fighter so I would tend to believe he didn’t hear the bell or launched his shot just prior to without it being possible to pull it back. Buddy’s own actions are important also. All be he buzzed and fogged in the head - he appeared to be “shaped up” to fight and was moving into Louis when Joe landed the right hand bomb. So there’s that to consider also I guess.
Yes, I’m also not a fan of those voiceovers done years after the fact. At the end of the day, the visual quality is most important - the footage you linked is awesome.
Thats why yo9u never bought a lot of beers for a Joe Louis or Mike Tyson fight, or got up to get them during the fight lol
