OK, obviously he's neither, but I don't know what to think after Macklin's amazing early performance and then massive fall from grace.

All props to Macklin, of course, and PROBABLY huge props to Buddy as well for achieving as much as they did here.

    EXCEPT:

All during the second half of the fight, Sergio was tagging Macklin with that lightning fast straight left. Same, of course, for the two KD's. In the vast majority of these shots, they happened as Macklin was throwing one of his slowish (but powerful) looping left hooks.

Now, if you're Macklin's trainer, knowing that Sergio's hand speed is what it is, wouldn't you train Macklin to NOT throw that punch?

    I don't get it.

Wel, yeah, that could be the answer. Once Sergio figured out what to do, a frustrated Macklin may have simply reverted to his old self.

I sure would like to here some interviewer ask Buddy about this.

Buddy came up with a good gameplan for a guy who had little chance. Brought a bit of boxing out of him. Won 3 or 4 rounds in a fight that his fighter was a HUGE underdog in (10-1 i believe). Suprised Martinez a little early. The champ adjusted. Stepped up the gears and the inferior fighter couldn't keep up. Simple as that. Good performances all round. Apart from the judges and HBO crew.

Agreed, i see ppl knocking McGirt but 2 things

A, it was McGirts training and prepping that allowed Macklin to fight this way and be so difficult and in a position to win

and B, it was a good stoppage

I'm not knocking Buddy. Jeez, read my post.

I'm just curious about Macklin's using that left-hook, when it obviously played right into Sergio's strengths.

    "amazing early performance"

I'm thinking the standards on the definition for "amazing" have been lowered so much over the years that it's been rendered virtually meaningless. Let's restore "amazing" back to its former glory. When I was a kid "fine" used to mean "great" and now it means "okay enough" and I don't want to see that happen again. :nonono

You don't think that a 10-1 underdog, being ahead on points half-way through the fight against the de facto P4P #3 fighter in the world, is an amazing performance?

    OK then .....

Good call tonight. Macklin was done.

This wasn't like Malignaggi still being on his feet and getting pummeled. Macklin was getting pummeled and KD x2.
