Nice matchup. I'll take a prime McGirt based on his versatility. He could fight orthodox very effectively, or he could switch it up, use speed and angles, footwork, in and out movement, etc. to make things difficult for his opponent while putting himself in spots to land clean shots from awkward positions. They were pretty similar punchers in terms of power IMO, McGirt just more free-flowing and loose.
I pretty much agree with this, I lean towards McGirt, but it's hard for me to call. I was watching De La Hoya-Quartey earlier today and forgot how good Ike was at his best (I had him winning by a point). I forgot how good the fight was as well.
I had Ike beating Oscar by a point as well, but I thought Oscar looked more mediocre than anything to be honest. Far too complacent in too many rounds, which ended up costing him the fight while Ike did little more than pump away with the jab. When Oscar let his hands go he generally got the better of Ike with his combos, otherwise he was just out-worked and out-scored with the jab IMO. Oscar's stamina was simply second rate past a certain point in his career, which led to a lot of coasting and taking rounds off. I'd probably take Oscar at his best over McGirt, but I could see McGirt beating him as well. I might favor McGirt over someone like Mosley.
Nice avatar. De La Hoya-Quartey was indeed a nice tussle. I don't think any fighter dominated rounds, thoroughly, apart from Quartey's rounds of 7, 8, and 9. Round 9, in particular was one where Quartey controlled De La Hoya with his jab and right hand. Who can forget that right hand he blasted off De La Hoya's nugget, only for De La Hoya to comeback seconds later with a couple of punches.
Quartey took the last three rounds off IMO. He was poking out the jab, scoring at times, but De La Hoya was the one coming forward and getting off with power shots inside. Personally, I think De La Hoya's knockdown in the 12th was a sight to behold. Not just the left hook he landed, also how he ducked under Quartey's right beforehand, then threw the hook. It was rather predictable as Quartey was walking backwards with his left extended to measure for throwing the right. Beautifully executed nontheless.
Yes it is. Quartey seemed to do well (mostly in the early rounds) at blocking a lot of DLH's combos with his elbows and gloves, and by the middle rounds, timing the right hand. I do agree with Sweet Pea that Oscar looked quite complacent for several rounds. I'll have to rewatch and analyze Quartey himself, I was just watching for entertainment. I'd say it was as good as any Welterweight fight in the past decade. What's your take on McGirt-Quartey Robbi?
Probably, McGirt in a close affair over the distance. I think Quartey could well drop him along the way. It would be a great fight when it comes to the strategic angle. Jose Luis Lopez dropped Quartey twice (I think) over 12 rounds. That fight was never a draw. Quartey controlled him with the jab all night long. It was a jabbing clinic. With Lopez's iron chin, Quartey was content on hanging back and bossing the fight at long-range.
Would be a close bout, not entirely sure who would win it. McGirt seemed to have some vulnerabilities with super aggressive fighters like Warren, Taylor, Baltazar and Leon, (which is probably why Whitaker tried to go right at McGirt and seize command in a body punching war) but if you fought against him sporadically and in patches he was extremely hard to outpoint. I can see McGirt beating both DLH and Quartey if they fight against him like they did against each other. But if they decided to open up more and take it to McGirt, they might have more success. Quartey is definitely stronger, but he was never that great at pressing fights down the stretch, neither was Oscar, and so they'd be vulnerable to losing to a guy like Buddy. I think I'd take Trinidad over McGirt though. Almost definitely over 15 rounds.
Damn this site readjustment by the way. is there anyway to take off the black and gold colouring and make it the white colour again? Looks like some posts were lost too. Was looking forward to reading the Emile Griffith thread this morning and it was no longer there....
Good matchup. I voted for Buddy. Pretty much what everyone else said, more versatile, a few more tools.
