    No it wasn't.

No chance of a win for Macklin and he just had two fairly hard knockdowns.

Macklin is obviously Irish, is as hard as nails and therefore should have gone out for the last round.....anything else would have been an insult to his Irish ancestors. How can he sleep at night now?

Really good call, Macklin had started to ship more and more punishment since about the 7th or 8th. Martinez would of went for the finish in the 12th and would of got it brutally. Good stoppage from McGirt.

Surprised Buddy was getting a bit of stick in this thread. I thought he gave some very good advise in the corner when Sky spared us from Khans meaningless rambles (Who let him near the mic). Also thought he had Matt boxing well not seen him use that much feints before and early on it was setting the right hand up well.

I don't fault McGirt for the stoppage but I think Gallagher would have been the better choice for Macklin. McGirt wanted Macklin to box but he was never going to win that type of fight. His best work came from his aggression, which wasn't seen enough and when it disappeared due to Macklin's lack of stamina, he started to get beaten up. Instead of putting on steady pressure all the way through the fight, Macklin was trying to outbox the boxer. When I watched the plan unravel, I couldn't help think about McGirt's tactics for Gatti against Mayweather. It was never a fight Gatti could have won but he could have been more than a punching bag. Whilst Macklin may not have beaten Martinez with Gallagher in his corner, I think he would have made it a tougher fight for the Argentine.

Gallagher's top notch conditioning was obviously missing too. Macklin has changed trainers a lot but I don't see any argument for McGirt being the right choice for him, and Macklin should revert to Gallagher's tutelage.

Macklin put up a great performance earlier in the fight but martinez was becoming stronger in the later stages. Matt was never going to win on points even with a strong 12th and i honestly couldnt see him surviving another round. I think the 12th would have been nasty and it could cause macklin a lot of damage.

Matts been in some cracking fights and some tough wars. They take a lot of shelf life out of a fighter and he has to be carefull becasue although hes young, another tough fight like that could spell disaster.

Too many times we watch fighters taking unnecessary punishment just to appease the sadistic fans.

Well I for one thought Buddy McGirt was spot on with his decision to pull Macklin out when he did. Macklin hadn't been competitive for 9 full minutes. And had also suffered heavy, heavy knockdowns as well

The way I see it is Macklin was saved from being knocked out and seriously hurt by McGirt pulling him out. At least after the decision Macklin could do an interview and actually think and talk about the fight. If he had went back out for the 12th he would have left the MSG on a stretcher

He saved Macklin from a brutal KO, it was the sensible thing to do.

My mate just called me from New York & was at the after fight party & said Macklin looked in a shocking state, looked like the elephant man according to him & no one over there who attended the fight & after party are complaining about the stoppage.

What are you talking about? I thought Macklin had a great game plan going. I thought he was winning before the 8th round. Up until Martinez started repeatedly landing the straight left.

And I don't know if your agressive attack is a great idea. Paul Williams tried that in the second fight. And look what happened. The same thing would have happend to Macklin.

The Defensive strategy was working. Martinez just had another gear and left Macklin in his dust. Thats what separates the great fighters from the good fighters.
