It's highly possible that Haney vs Gamboa will happen this November. Gamboa has been washed up for years. Adding a "big name" to your resume is the usual in this sport but doesn't it seem pretty pointless when they're beyond shot? Would you rather see fighters fight a good up and coming fighter who presents a challenge than a 'once upon a time' big name who needs to retire? Do promoters prey upon the fans' nostalgia they have for the sport?
I agree with your thinking but for some reason fans seem to put a lot of stock in a name. For example, I'd have put very little weight on either Klitschko beating Holyfield at the time he was calling them out because he was basically fossilizing in real time. But some folks have said that they avoided him. * shrug * I guess the name still means more than the actual win in some people's minds.
He's a very young fighter. They want him in their with someone experienced to get him ready for a higher caliber of opponents going forward. Where as let's say EE fighters spend the bulk of their early twenties fighting hundreds of amateur fights in a system much more developed than there is in north america US and Mexican fighters tend to be seasoned gradually as pros. There's nothing more to it than that
It's a pointless fight. Waste of time. Haney gains nothing KOing Gamboa early on, which I would expect.
Better both with similar age and ranking and record in records quality. Interesting because close matchups are unpredictable. This is common in boxing. Name matters etc things. For example I do not gave Loma fight vs Rigo as marquee win because he was out of prime. Marquee fight it was, because Rigo big name is, even without his pro career. Marquee win no, cos Rigo age and Rigo was smaller than Loma. Also 0 credit for Salido from me for fight with Loma. Salido was considerably heavier and fought . The same about these wins vs out of prime Povetkin, Klitschko, Holmes or Ali.
