No, they're both regionally popular. Nobody outside New England like Manfredo, and most people here really don't give a **** about him tbh - even those few of us who follow boxing. He's like Ruiz in that respect.

Now, Jose Antonio Rivera? The man is a local god. :ibutt

Why does Bunce even care? Joe is retired, and that is a good thing. Nobody wants to see that slapper anymore.

Contender made Manfredo really popular in the US and in the UK. You can't say the same about Dawson. There's no comparison. Millions watched Manfredo's final with Mora IIRC.

he's spot on though. Dawson as good as he is, he's a nobody, and Calzaghe was a star back then.

55K vs Kessler people. Meanwhile Dawson is crying in Mexico for Suleiman to let him keep his belt.

But that's just what the British media pumped out to you guys pre fight.Manfredo was portrayed as some kind of star only in the British media. He was and is a nobody. The Contender got dumped as a show so what does that tell you.Not a chance in hell MILLIONS watched or they wouldnt have dumped the show.

The Contender series never really took off over here. If anything the welterweight season was probably the most talked about that I recall and..yeah..how often do you hear people talking about Grady Brewer or Gary Balletto these days? :yep

Although Bika-Codrington definitely got hyped on ESPN...and there was a good local turnout and a good vibe when I went to the finale live. That may have been its peak season. Certainly not the recent Cruiserweight season, and certainly not the Mora/Manfredo/Gomez season. :yep Wasn't there another one before even that one that everybody's forgotten all about, too?

And there was the DLH show.

Wow, just seen this. I believe Bunce would not have objected to Calzaghe-Woods (pre-Tarver) or Calzaghe-Tarver (pre-Dawson.) In fact I think he was quite happy to discuss their potential and he actually endorsed Calzaghe-Jones.

Now, given that Jones had beaten Woods but both more recent and relevant Tarver beat both Jones and Woods comprehensively and then lost easily to Dawson it should make common sense that Dawson was a plausible opponent for Calzaghe. That is if you look at boxing through the eyes of a fan and don't see it as a vehicle just for a few people (many undeserving) to get rich from. Running the sport along these lines strips away it's credibility. It's surprising that a boxing pundit only seems to see it this way.

"What gives Dawson the right...?" ???

Because Bunce neither seems to see nor feel a sense of history of boxing champions and championships he believes opportunities should be "earned" through being popular. That seems to be so out of touch with what fans want. On purely "cash common sense" grounds presumably he'd have backed all the Great White Hopes of yesteryear being favoured over better and more talented opponents? His attitude makes me feel sad for boxing's future.

Steve Bunce his been a boxing and sports journalist for over 20 years.
Honest and is not afraided to say what he thinks.
Refreshing in this day and age to have journalist who does that.

That's his opinion, like all you have ur opinions, but he gets paid lots of money for it.

Sorry, but here we actually have a pundit giving boxers ready made excuses not to fight. Rejecting a fight with one of the best fighters in the division on the grounds that he's not popular enough does not make a healthy, credible sport. Yet Bunce made a case for Jones as a Calzaghe opponent on Jones results post-Tarver II - which included two more comprehensive defeats.

Bunce seems to feel the sport should be moulded just to suit those who want to make money from it. Anyway, who said that "Dawson was the best light-heavyweight of the last 20 years?" I cannot believe that or is it another Bunce Fact?

Well we all know how he thought Jennings had a chance against cotto because of his loss to margo. And how he thought hatton could take cotto! I'm a Brit too and he makes me sick sometimes when he goes over the top with this BS. A fighter is good not due to race but his abilities and other relevant attributes.
