i think it was the Audley thing that did it but there is no reason they cant pick up so of the big fights are shown on sky or setenta and rerun them a week later like they did with the Calzaghe-Kessler fight and Ricky-PBF.
sky always has that stuffness with the bow ties etc. I do like Watt and Glen to a certain degree and although i like Nelson the boxer he only seems to like certain type of boxers (normally the slick ones) which pisses me off.
Audley has alot to answer for but even then the coverage was crap. John Inverdale was too smug for me but Woodhall & Buncey did a good job. I don't know why they don't show the big fights like Lennox vs Rahman.
if i remember correctly the boxing on the beeb was a lot to do with the guy who was running the sport at the time who was a boxing fan. there was a time for a bit when they showed a few big fights on a sunday the day after they happened in the US. i remember seeing mayorga-Forest, woods-Jones, Mab-pacman, Oscar-Vargas(i think). i do remember during the MAB fight the guy calling the fight said that Barrera had Tapia on his short as a tribute to Johnny Tapia:roll:
Dave Clark always using his hands for questions, Nelson & Piper who seem to contradict everything they have said before. McCrory & Darke are always enthusastic covering the fights but I do like Watt's honesty aswell.
They used to show these fights on a Sunday afternoon or night. Why didn't they do it live instead? By the way I hate the Irish dude who commentates now.
he's the guy who did the olympics and is obviously with his energy a big fan of the sport but just gets wrong a lot of the time. i prefer him to Darke who i dont know why winds me up. Nicky Piper does know his stuff but is a little to safe as if he is trying not to upset people and for me Dave Clark should stick to the darts.
TV networks aren't under any obligation to show boxing. It's up to the promoters to put together appealing packages that the networks feel are worth spending their tight budgets on. You have to remember the Beeb, rightly or wrongly, is funded by the general public. If people are not interested in boxing, their money is being wasted.
John H Stracey sounded completely sharp and on the ball. Really pleasing to hear after all these years. I remember Pavlik's trainer on the Bunce hour before the Hopkins fight and he was more than confident - he was arrogant. This was two days before the fight. I hate it when the excuses come out after. Especially when they say 'No excuses but ...and....and ...and' Lost a lot of respect from the Pavlik camp for that.
Removing any patriotic blinkers and as a boxing fan first and foremost, I'd prefer an explanation offered as to how and why Jennings is in a position to be fighting for a vacant 'world' title in the first place. Why is it that issues like that - issues that seriously and continually erode boxing's credibility - are never discussed? It's not about fear of litigation.
