What makes me laugh is that he's come on here too stir up some ****, try and provoke people into calling his phone-in show by calling them tosspots and so on, but the response has been overwhelmingly rational and reasonable!

I'm impressed with the fact that people haven't risen to the bait and started flaming him. I'm also impressed that, despite his negativity, people have been gracious and respectful towards Bunce.

Although I would agree with Bunce that 80% or so of the people on here are tosspots, go look in the Lounge if you doubt it, the people who have talked about him here are far from tosspots and deserve a bit more respect from the man. Its not wise to insult and offend your potential viewers Steve, show a bit more respect.

You must understand, Buncey is a journalist. Thats his job. You may be a carpet fitter, a mechanic, an office skivvy, whatever, but his bread and butter is writing and talking about boxing. Therefore, a web forum where people do his job FOR FREE is a threat to his profession. Its the same with all journalists. The internet and "citizen journalism" (a phrase I loathe btw) has made print journalism and newspapers almost redundant, and now forums like these are making boxing opinions and commentary by so called "experts" redundant too. Look at it in terms of the bigger picture and you'll understand why he feels so threatened by it.

On a personal level I like Buncey a lot. He's passionate and entertaining. He's been around the business for years and writes very well. I said it before in another post but Richie Woodall and Steve Bunce **** all over Max Kellerman and Larry Merchant, both in terms of entertainment and knowledge of the sport. But my respect for him has gone down somewhat by the way he has conducted himself on here.

He doesnt strike me as being stupid, and I think that his imflammatory rhetoric is to provoke people into calling his phone-in show because the first edition bombed so terribly. Even if its just to say "**** off you fat cockney wanker" people will now phone in.

# 70. Terrific post. The tosspot reference as I've said somewhere else was aimed exclusively at the posters who bragged that they would call and then failed to do so. I'm a massive fan of boxing forums - I think they help keep the sport of boxing honest. Also, forums don't threaten my living but they do put pressure on journalists who are clueless. And, once again, the show never bombed because it wasn't my show. If I did have a boxing phone in then I would call people in amateur clubs up and down the country and get them ready.

Couldn't agree more, the fact there's a boxing phone-in show on TV in this country is pretty phenomenal achievement and we should be grateful that it exists. I hope it gets another shot, it shows how far that boxing has come in this country that this phone-in show could even be a concievable reality. This was unimaginable 5-10 years ago, and I'm sure people older than me would verify that it was even more unthinkable 10-20 years ago. We should make the most of it, not deride it.

Everyone here owes Buncey a debt of gratitude for at least ATTEMPTING to get something like this off the ground. Boxing is unfairly ignored by the media, be it out of class snobbery or plain old fashioned ignorance. Something that redresses the balance ought to be gripped with both hands by all true boxing fans.

Is there going to be another attempt at the show? If so I'd be willing to phone in, its imperative that we dont let this opportunity slip past. Buncey, make sure that you advertise the times and dates of the next show on here well in advance, I imagine that a lot of people here would love to phone up and discuss boxing had they known about it. Even if its just so they can hear their own voice on the television they will still do it.

As for your other comments about boxing forums, well, you should be aware that boxing forums are the intravenous drip that has kept boxing alive in lieu of the fact it recieves **** all mainstream television coverage, so love them or loathe them they are needed. Also, you dont need to backpedal on your "tosspots" remark, there's a very large constituency of tosspots on here and I'll be the first to name names if I have to.

Buncey is obviously very enthusiastic about the sport and its bloody obvoius that he loves it, thats why i like the guy. Remember some of the boring twats that Sky used to bring in to the studios in the 90's who would put you into a coma before the fight started.

Bunce makes tha build up and breaks between fights entertaining and i like listening to the guy, even when he does come out with some wee clangers..........like i said in another post knowone is right all the time and in a sport like boxing its good to hear differing opinions when watching on the TV.

Woodhall, Bunce and Nelson should be the main 3 guys :good

 

Plenty, but I dare say that none of them earnt a penny for their poor judgement. When inside sport put aside some airtime for an article on the fight, he didn't just allude to a possible upset, he emphatically stated that he thought Hatton would win.
If I didn't consider him knowledgable, I wouldn't have deemed it relevant to mention, as I wouldn't have been surprised.

 

So us posters who backed up Buncey get called 'tosspots' do we for not phoning in?

#79. In my head I could see a Hatton win. I knew Mayweather lacked motivation. I knew Ricky had the motivation. Nobody knew that Hatton would fight without using his brain and offer Mayweather an easy target all night long. I spent three days with Ricky and Billy and saw what they were doing - in the ring Ricky never once put into play a single move that he and Billy worked on. So was that a) Mayweather's genius b) Hatton's rage and total lack of tactics. I vote for b. Most people vote for a. But, did people say before the fight that Mayweather will slowly smash Ricky to bits and knock him out and that Ricky would not given him a single bad moment? No, most people said that Floyd would coast and play to a wide points win with Ricky chasing him. I still think that Ricky fought like a fool and allowed everything about the fight to get inside his head. I made a mistake because I didn't realise that he had lost control of his boxing brain long before the opening bell. I stand by the prediction.
