At the elite level his ring-intelligence is ****-awful.

 

Theres only really the Mayweather fight as evidence to support that. His other two fights againsts 'elites' (thats the new 'cool' ESB word eh?), where a KO against JLC and the Zoo fight where he executed his gameplan pretty much perfectly.

 

I find it impossible to believe that behind closed doors, Ricky Hatton was looking like a Floyd Mayweather beater, and that he and Billy Graham had been working on 'moves' that would have won him the fight, only to not be utilised due to his rage. It looked to me like Ricky attempted to initiate clinches as his primary weapon (as we've seen him do before when up against it), but failed, owing to Floyd's rather surprising vast superiority in that area.

You can only effectively change a fighter so much and for all the things Ricky is, one thing he certainly isn't is versatile.

 

Alright Gaz I surrender; shouldn't have said anything as I don't wan't to get into another Hatton slagging match (had enough of those after the Lazcano fight). Will just say that his strategy nearly always revolves around the same thing, of using his physical strength advantage to bore through his opponent. At WW, against Collazo and Floyd, that advantage was not there, and he had no ring intelligence to fall back on; Collazo (no great shakes as SSM proved) nearly knocked him out, and was unlucky not to get the decision, while PBF did knock him out. He has only rudimentary skills, which happened to help him out against guys with worse skills, like that caveman Urango.

What I said did not refer to gameplan, but rather to ring-generalship.

 

I don't get into "slanging matches"..... Hatton plays to his strengths with is surely a good thing to do? The fact is those strengths arn't effective at welterweight, that doesn't mean though that he has "****-awful ring intelligence", just that he hasn't got the tools physically and styistically to adapt at the highest level at 147 but you can only play with with the toys you've been given. He's shown intelligence and adaptability several times at 140, esp. fighting for long periods protecting a cut.

 

i also favoured hatton to pull off a close pts win.

i went on recent fights and felt mayweather would box cautious under hatton's fire.

got that completely wrong. floyd stood in there with hatton a lot lot more than i ever thought he would.

still thought hatton put up a decent argument on the night. floyd just upped it in those middle rds and hammered out the win.

hatton will prove his greatness by the time he's finished. :yep

 

Well, its always funny to know that you and Buncey picked Hatton to win on points.

On points Floyd is the greatest modern day boxer, if not THE greatest boxer of all time.
& you brits thought Ricky Hatton would outpoint him. Talk about hype going to your heads? No wonder people like me had a laugh in the build up, to this day I still cannot believe anyone picked Hatton. Especially on points.

I dont want to go over old ground, but I remember ESB the day before & despite me & a few others going on about Ricky slitting his own throat & so-on, the brits were throwing their money at a hatton KO win, against Floyd ****in Mayweather jnr Crazy ****.

I hope Bunce gets his phone-in on a regular basis, cos I want to phone in & have some fun predicting the big fights, cos my record is pretty ****in good.

 

I bought into the hype Months before I said I just really hope Ricky can last all 12 and by fight night I couldn't imagine naything other than Ricky knocking the **** out of him atsch

just felt hatton may impose that style and floyd might be a bit cautious.

don't forget he had been a bit cautious against sluggers in the past. admittedly he'd also met them head on in the past. atsch
