On the boxing hour on 5.3.09 you referred to the fight as something that had been discussed. You then moved on to other matters.

Can you explain the background to the story?

I presume it goes back to his victory over Hatton, and Calzaghe having beaten Kessler a month before. There would have been mega dollar signs, but PBF could in no way move to 168, and Joe to move down would mean chopping a leg off. I hindsight of Pacman v DLH, it was not such a freak show as first imagined

Yes it is mate.Theres no way ever that fight would happen.Huge huge difference in size.Pretty boys picked his way through the welter weight division, why ? because the quality at welter means he has a good chance of losing his 0, as he's out his natural weight class. Now jump up again 21lb and meet a man who's arguably the best super ever. Its simply not happening.....Could'nt think of any other fight i'd least like to see

I got the impression from watching the show that when Bunce said it was talked about, he was referring to fans discussing the possibility on sites like this one. Fans talking about how far PBF could potentially move up and who he could face.

I don't think he meant the two parties got together and actually discussed the possibility of a fight between the two.

It would be awesome. Floyd would be smashed like a hard boiled egg.

Calzaghes work rate and toughness would be far too much for Floyd.

Calzaghe would just totally outwork him.

Could never have been seriously discussed. At the very least there would be 14lbs between them. Would never be sanctioned.

I think it stemed from the build up to the PBF Hatton fight when Floyd said something like 'If I wanted to fight the best fighter in Britain I'd be fighting Joe Calzaghe and not Ricky Hatton'

Maybe this retirement thing is all a bluff and they'll fight each other this year

It was discussed - there is not a pairing between welter and heavy that could not be made if the money made sense.
Remember the Hamed path...Gatti to Oscar - there was far more than 14 pounds in that fight.
I'm not saying it is right or good for the sport...I'm just saying it was talked about.

    Adios.
