How do you get your books published Buncey? Do you just write the full book then hope the publishers want it?

My Wicki thing has been repeatedly hacked. Michael Buffer once asked me about my role in the first Star Wars film - he was deadly serious and still thinks that I was part of the first film. I was, according to Wicki, the R2D2 reserve or something equally mad!
Somebody asked about books...well, the Watson book was commissioned, the Boxing Greats book was commissioned and The Fixer was first punted when I had written 10,000 words. However, it was not sold (six years later!) until I had completed the whole 100,000 words.

I do not want to be rude, but I never really thought you were a boxing historian. I thought you admitted to not watching old fights and not interested too muhc in the past, but I could, and hopefully, be wrong.

 

The Watson book is excellent and I am a fan of Bunce's writing but I generally don't like reading fiction.

I'll read a sentence of fiction then think 'no, that didn't happen'

When there is so much good real stuff to read about, why bother with made up stuff?

Do you really think that there is so much good 'real' stuff about?
In the last ten years I bet that I've only read 15 boxing books cover to cover, another 50 I've skipped through to be polite and another 80 I've simply torched.
My shelves sag with books from more than 15 years ago - The 16th Round; Buttercups and Strong Boys; Fighting Words; Punchlines; Empire of Deceit; Money, Myth and Betrayal; In the Corner; Black Lights. These are books I trust and they are from real writers or experienced boxing journalists.
There are modern exceptions.
I will bring out a book on the Nineties next - fact and not a lot of fiction: I'm trying to push it through by Christmas.

Buncey, my comment was meant as a general 'reading' comment and not just about boxing.

I agree a lot of the modern writing is rubbish and I am working through a lot of older stuff (which is how I found Watson which until I got it I didn't realise you wrote), like Schulberg

Just out of interest are you referring to Christian Guiluce (sp?) and the Duran book as a modern exception? If so (and I enjoyed the book in spite of this) it is very apparent that the author was not there and was not even a fan at the time.

This contrasts very starkly with Kimball's treatment.

A nineties reflection would be good. Lots of stories, a golden era, and probably enough 'names' that would be familiar to the powers that be at the publishing companies.
